Any tennis players/fans here on TST? Post your thoughts here!

I started watching some of the early rounds of the Aussie Open last night. Nole mopped the court with the journeyman he played, and looked like he barely broke a sweat. I never cease to be amazed how he can run down a ball way out wide to his BH, extend and slide (on hardcourt!), and hit a rope winner down the line.

I got out and played a few sets last week. Felt good and played well. I think tennis and golf are perfect complimentary sports.

I wish I was, but our summertime activities typically don't include tennis, and I have trouble serving since dislocating my shoulder 12 years ago or so.

I generally watch the last few rounds of the Grand Slam events (semis, finals), but that's pretty much it as far as pro tennis goes. I played a bit in high school and actually took it back up last year. I'm not very good (at all), but I do always have fun. I can't serve for my life (when I play I pretty much have given up, and just sort of whack it over the net, which is at the very least repeatable and I rarely fault), but I finally learned to hit a topspin forehand, and I have a decent backhand (I'm actually solid at backhand spin shots). My biggest weak spot is that I''ll get a bit careless and I'll clang one off the metal.

Good for you. Tennis is great for staying fit, esp as one gets older.

When you frame one like that, we say that you paid for the whole racquet so you might as well use the whole thing. Actually, framing and other mishits are usually 300% due to taking the eyes off the ball and the attendant moving of the head (sound familiar?). I have posted a few times on how I use my eye focus from tennis in my golf game.

I played a lot of tennis as a kid but have not played in many years. I will from time to to time watch the major event finals, especially Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. If I could play tennis during the winter I would but we do not have any indoor courts around here so I play racquetball every week during the winter and when the weather is decent I spend it on the golf course.

I definitely do not follow it on TV, but used to play when I was younger (before I got into golf.)

I do not take advantage of the club like I should, but when we play it's usually around 9 or 10 on a Saturday night so no one sees us - it never lasts long though because the wife thinks we are just supposed to hit the ball back and forth nicely to each other and I get accused of trying to kill her if I hit it back faster than she likes.

That's funny because when I play with my wife ( ) she tries her best to murder me. Thank goodness she's not better than me..

Holy shmoly. Nole looked like an absolute surgeon with the laser knife disecting Ferrer last night, and David is not normally an easy out. He was hitting winners that landed only 6 ft from Ferrer - hard piercing shots that David, who has great wheels, had no chance of touching.

Love playing tennis, but havent been able to get a regular match for a while. Will play as the possibility presents itself.

Love tennis. Ended up plaing it in High School when an ill-timed appendectomy cancelled my golf season. :-( Unfortunately, I tore my right rotator cuff some years ago and my overhead/serve has never really recovered. Great sport though and a great way to keep in shape!

I just bought a Wilson ProStaff 6.0, a reissue of the weapon that Sampras wielded. Shadow swinging in my living room, this thing is a beast. Can't wait to pound the snot out of some balls (and an opponent) with it...

Oh and, congrats to Novak for his 3rd Aussie Open title. Great match against Murray..

Today I head out to watch the Miami Open first round and qualifying. Last week I was at Arnie's tourney.....watching and playing Tennis and Golf...my life.  Can't seem to pick one over the other - so I'm mediocre at both......

Started playing tennis last August. Been wanting to try it for some time, but never got around to it.

I love it so far! Only thing that's a bit unfortunate compared to golf is that you can't practice all that much alone. During the summer I can practice golf for hours days in a row, but in tennis I really want someone to practice with. Currently live in a small city, so I don't have that many to practice with.

I'm especially happy about being able to play it all year around. That's the worst part about golf around here, that courses are usually only open 6 months a year.

Starting to get the hang of things, putting some speed and spin on the ball. As always pleasing to see that I make progress.

The old Prostaff is a great stick, loads of control. I bought a couple of them when Tennis Warehouse first reissued them and use them almost exclusively. Haven't been on court in some time though.

Haven't played lately, but was playing mixed doubles a few nights a week with a group of men and women my age and a bit older (50's and 60's). There's something about playing sports against women where it's hard for me to go all-out against them. If there's a guy on the other side playing up to the net and I get a soft lob, I'm hitting it as hard as I can right at him. I can't do that against a woman and it has little to do with how skilled they are.

I spent several days down in Miami early this week and was able to see a lot of world class players practicing.  Pretty fortunate to see world class golfers last week at Arnie's tourney and now this.......living in FLA has its perks.  Took a lot of pictures.......

I played when I was younger, but at some point, while also playing golf, my knees went south on me for the tennis game. At least that was my excuse for not continuing to play the game of tennis. I have a cousin who is a tennis instructor. I still play when I visit him, but he knows to take it easy on me. No way I can beat him at his game.  He still works with quite a few junior players up in NoCal. He does not golf, so there is no way to get even with him....

I also had a hand in building Agassi's home in Vegas way back when. That's my big claim to the pro tennis game.

    • It’s simple. Hook it onto the tee box of the adjacent hole. Get a GIR with your approach. Birdie hole. #5 Hook it to the adjacent fairway Hit green with next shot. Birdie hole. I call it the Bill Method.
    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆
