I have been saving up for a boat for two years. This is the year that I finally (pun intended) jump into the deep end and buy a boat. I need some motivation.

What are the best things about having a boat? What types of things does your wife/girlfiend enjoy about having a boat? (I need some help with the wife.)  What brands of boat have the fewest probelms?

MOST OF ALL - I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME PICTURES!

(Please refrain from posting negative comments about boat ownership, and especially the tired old cliches of "best two days of your life: when you buy a boat and when you sell it" and "money pit.")

Thanks.

My family owns a 2009 Nautic Star bay boat that we use around the beach and local lakes.  The best thing about owning a boat is that it is just pure fun!  Nothing like going to the lake and spending ALL day just cruising around fishing, socializing and skiing.  Now granted they require quite a bit of up keep (this, I'm sure you already know) but it is well worth it I believe.  Can't speak from the wife prespective but my mom enjoys the boat because she enjoys fishing and photography is a big hobby of hers (sunsets at the beach, wildlife at the lake, etc.).

I am away from home right now but I will try to upload some pics whenever I get back that way!

I've been into boats since I was about 7 when our family had a little cabin on a lake in northern Idaho.  I've had a variety ranging from small aluminum fishing boats to sailboats to ocean cruisers.   Currently I've got a 55 foot Compass pilothouse that we enjoy around San Diego and a trip or two to Catalina each year.

Twin Cat diesels at 420HP each.    We also carry a 12 foot RIB with 40HP to zip around, and I love poking around coves and inlets around Catalina on it, or covering all of San Diego bay.

And here's one of our favorite activities on it - enjoying the view from the flybridge with a couple margaritas in hand!

^ Nobody wants to go after him.

I have a 420 sailboat for class racing but I don't use it much anymore. Spend most of my time crewing on my buddy's Nacra F18 Infusion - more class racing.

Heres mine!!  Taken from a friends boat.  Thats my son in the middle, friend in the back, and me in the front.  Just a small fishing boat, but it gets us on the water.

I love cats!   That feeling of hanging off the trapeze and flying a hull is better than any go-fast powerboat can deliver.     I saved up my lawn mowing money when I was in junior high and bought a Hobie 14, and then later got a 16, but I lusted after the Nacra cats for a long time.  Actually, I still do!      I have the desire to get an end tie slip for our main boat so I can have room to keep a Nacra on a float in the water ready to go at any time, but the slip cost just gets even more outrageous that it already is.    Someday we'll just downsize from our current boat and I'll get a runabout and a Nacra to fuel my water addiction.

If you got this you would have to join "Porto Cima"

To the OP, I notice you are in Dallas. I bought a Viper Cobra bass boat from Affordable Boats in Wylie. It is a report dealer and I got an awesome deal, and an overall great experience from them. There is also another repo dealer south of Houston, in Dickinson (my area), called American Yacht Sales. Buying new sounds goose, but I highly recommend checking out these two places to save ALOT of $$$$. For instance, I bought mine for 1/3 less than loan value, almost 1/2 market value. Feel free to PM me for more details.

  • 1 year later...

I just finished up my boat project this weekend.  I had been threatening to do it for a few years and finally decided to pull the trigger.  Some of the items I had laying around, and some I had to purchase.  Total count for the remodel job was less than $200.

First two pics are as close as I could find to a "before".  Some demo had already started though.

Next two pics are of rebuilt transom.

Next pic is of floor installed and painting taking place.

Finishing touches!! Including storage lockers on the sides..

Took it out Saturday night.  It was much nicer to fish out of.  Now I need a little bit bigger motor.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
