I'm just asking this question to get an idea of what everyone prefers. I work for a country club and I think it will be a good idea to show my manager some new ways to get more people to the course. So, I'm going to say some scenarios and you just tell me what you think of them
(Let's say everyone's in your same skill area)
Do you like playing with strangers when you're on vacation?
Do you like to play with new people even if you have friends willing to play?
Do you like to only play with friends?
I'm going to try to put in a poll option too, please tell me what you're looking for in a match!

No idea how to vote.... I "like" playing with anyone who enjoys and respects the game. Given the choice though, I prefer to play with my buddies for the additional competitive/social component....

i've got friends to play with, but coordinating schedules can be a challenge, so we only get out together 4 or 5 times a year.

since i usually get out on Mondays, i'm often a single wherever i go. 99% of the time i get paired with cool people (of all skill levels) and only played with complete douche-nozzles on one or two occasions.

i also don't mind playing alone if the course is empty - i can get around in under 3 hours most of the time.

I voted with the first one, but It doesn't have to be on vacation. Β I play with strangers quite often even on my home course. Β I also play numerous local courses in Colorado, and usually with strangers when I'm away from my home course. Β Most of my golfing friends were strangers when I met them on the first tee.

I don't mind playing alone if there's space on the course for singles. I keep myself from pushing any groups ahead if I know they're there - and there's no one behind me. I'll throw a couple of extra balls around the green and practice chips/putts to kill some time.

Sometimes the folks in the pro shop assume that singles want to be joined up. I don't.

On the other hand, you never know who you might be paired with...

I like playing with new people. At my C.C. I go out there alone sometimes and they just stick me with some guys and it's usually a good time.Β  I also play on the Golf Channel Am Tour, and each tournament I am usually playing/meeting new people in my group so it's no big deal.Β  It's just as fun to be with my regular group as it is to be with new people.Β  It helps me to get a different perspective on the golf course. Plus you can meet some interesting people.

I don't mind playing with new people sometimes. I do like to play as a single at least half of the time though.

I usually prefer to playing with friends, then alone, then with strangers. Β But its nice to mix it up.

I don't know how to vote on this one.

I think everyone prefers playing with friends, since they're a known entity and obviously you enjoy being in their company.

That being said, I've never played golf on vacation when I'm not with at least one friend, but have no aversion to playing a round with strangers or by myself no matter where I'm at. Β After all, I've met my best golf partners by being paired up with them when I was alone at the course or them joining up with our group. I also met and have kept contact with Scott Erickson (Minnesota Twins World Series Winner) because of being in a twosome and paired up with his twosome.

I would perfer to play with family or friends, the few times I have acepted others to play they have been very cool people.

I have never played by my self......that sure does not sound correct!

I used to hate (fear) playing with strangers, now I find the most fun I have is usually with new people. We are all just whacking it around and if you aren't to high on yourself there is Β lot of good times to be had with new people.

You have to be challenged in some way to not want to golf with this:

I dont mind playing with strangers - i've only been paired with an a-hole twice in my life.

Our club, however has given up on the social aspect of the club - most tourneys, people will not play if they cant choose their own foursome - which has some of us questioning the integrity of the tourneys.

I just like playing.Β  With friends, alone, or with strangers, makes no never mind as long as they are not jerks.Β  And jerk strangers have been pretty rare, over the years.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Ill play with anyone, anytime, anywhere so long as they can handle my golf game. When I started playing last year, I turned up to my local club, knew a few people and asked if I could play. I had a mate from work say, he would turn up and I could play with him. Well he didn't turn up and I played with 3 other guys who were all playing under 15HC. Oh yea great initiation, a drongo who can't tell you what a gap wedge is and how to use it. I played like, well they did me a favor and didn't talk to me too much about it after the game finished, but throughout the game they tried to help me. I have played heaps of times at my local club and I think 80% of the time it was with people I didnt know. now I know most of them and it's great. They treat me like shit now because they know me and I've won some scrounges days. Wouldn't have it any other way. In saying that I still don't mind playing an away course and be paired up with 2 people I don't know and just go for it. It's only golf so I say enjoy it anyway it comes

    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on.Β πŸ˜‰ Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.Β  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seemΒ  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
