Hardest concept for me to get into my thick skull. I take a few lessons during the winter every year and it is the one thing I always have to go back and work on. I feel it as a hip turn. Say I'm working a 7i, I draw the club back into the back swing and feel the stretch in my left side (I'm a righty), I've turned my upper body, and hips to a lesser degree, but my head stays still over the ball.

At the top of my back swing, I pause for a split second (feels like a long time) to allow time for my hip to fire. I sense that I'm driving my right hip into the ball. I feel it as a turn, not a slide (but other may sense it differently). I'm not sure if it make much difference as long as you clear your hips to allow your upper body to unwind into the downswing. If you don't clear your hips you will block the shot and hit it to the right (usually).

This is a good question. I find it hard to feel which I am doing. If I look in a mirror front on and do a swing, it looks as though I'm driving hips towards the path the ball will take, but it doesn't feel that way. It's kinda hard not to have some sort of lateral movement in the hips and I think it's probably a mixture of both you should aim for.
