I have a question for the solo golfers out there, I often struggle to see my ball in the sun and was wondering how the solo players go about this when you dont quiet see where your ball goes of the drive?? this is the only thing thats putting me off joining a club at the min.

I have the exact same problem.  The last hole on the course I play at is in the direct sun and its a wide open par 5. I cant tell you how many times Ive looked and looked and looked and never been able to find my ball.  The minute you hit your drive if you do not see the ball you are screwed.

I don't get it.  What course lets out a single on a busy weekend day?

At least here in CO, there is no open spot on a weekend for a single to get out alone.

This guy behind me started to hit his ball past us.     We would let him pass but this was Sunday and every hole was filled with players.  While everyone is resigned to a 5 hour round due to the course being full, this guy seems to be pressuring us to let him pass.   When he hit one pass our green while we were preparing to putt, I turned around and give him a peace of mind.   He stopped hitting past us after that.  A few holes later on start of back 9, he was joined by a trio behind him.  Now, everyone including him was all moving at 5 hour pace.   I think he should know, letting a solo player play through on a busy day delays everyone's playing time.

I often play alone but do try to avoid it on super busy days.  However, I am always willing to pair up with anyone.. but others don't feel the same way.  Unless the starter forces a grouping often people don't want a stranger with them, and at that point there is nothing you can do.

For example, we had a twosome fire into my threesome today when it was obvious we were within range.  His drive landed 3ft from my feet.  There was no need for this as there was no reason to let them play through.  We stayed on the heels of the group in front of us all day and every group in front of us was a foursome.

Some people just have no class.

I didn't want to be the one guy that made a slight logjam into a really bad one. I told them not to rush beyond a normal pace of play on my account. On the back nine it cleared up and I was able to pass them and finish at my leisure. I never expect to have a fast round when I go on the weekends.

It is pretty rare that any of the courses, besides the one private course, gets extremely busy around here. Especially this time of year when it oppressively hot.  Unless there is a tourney or special event going on then you can generally play by yourself.

That depends on the course and on the situation of that particular day.  At Foothills I often had a late cancellation on the tee sheet, and if I only had a single on the waiting list, he got the spot, with the warning that the course was full in front of him so he would not be able to play through and would do a lot of waiting.  Lots of courses have open times in the afternoon throughout the summer where a single or a twosome would be waiting behind a course full of foursomes.

I play about  half my golf on short notice when I get a gap in my schedule. My home course - even on busy days - averages two individual no-shows an hour. The starter said if it's not a tournament day, to just show up and he can probably get me out within the hour, plugging me into a no-show's slot.

Except for a couple of times this summer, I was off the tee within an hour of arrival.

Someone always no-shows or at least late-shows.  Its rare that I can't get squeezed in on any particular day.  I usually get paired up when I do that, but not always.

But I  usually try to show up before the first tee time.  Its less crowded and they'll often let me off before the first group.  When I play alone, its usually before 6am.

That's a good idea. I may ask the clubhouse if they would let me do that. Plus, I wouldn't get back too long after the kids woke up so the wife wouldn't mind me playing a bit more.

getting home around 9 or 930 is a great way to keep the wife happy.  Or at least less unhappy.

My problem with that is that golf has a huge social aspect for me.  It's way more than just knocking a ball around the course.  I play, then usually stop up in the clubhouse for a beer at least, and often for lunch.  Or we will go to one of several nearby restaurants for lunch.  So for the social time both on the course and after the round, playing with friends is far and away my preferred way to go.

If no friends are available, then the next choice is getting hooked up with strangers who just might become golf friends in the future.  Playing alone is way at the bottom of the list.

I really enjoy playing on my own.

I do it often in the evenings, sometimes I get 18 in or even 15, 12, 9 etc.

I find I walk a lot faster when on my own, almost like I'm too eager to get to that ball and hit my shot. The course I play can be quiet in the evenings so it's not often there is slow play, and if I do catch a group, they are cool most of the time to let me through.

I do talk aloud to myself though.

Tend to leave the pin in as well.

Will occasionally give myself a Mulligan or 4.

I was playing last night on my own and was 3 feet away from a hole in one. Part of me was hoping it wouldn't go in as I had no one with me and if I have never had one before.

Not the new Depp film but playing a round on your own, do many people do it I am not a shy person by any means so I am going to play as much as possible on my own to learn the game in my own time, is it frowned upon or are people not bothered. Cheers Spen

Its the ideal way to focus on your own golf game and not suffer the distractions of socialising when you really should be golfing.

However, bunting the ball around with friends is fun.

Depends on what you want to do on the day. Its your choice.

I would rather play alone for many of the reasons mentioned.  Also, nobody likes me anyway.  Actually, the only time I ever play golf is when I am by myself or with someone.  (stupid statements like that are probably why nobody likes me).

Not that I mind the occasional repetitive post, but really? lol.  I think there is this same topic on page 1.  Lets at least let it get to page two!

And for the question, this year I became a member at a club I play, so now instead of going range, I just go club and play alone for practice! Usually just do 9 though, might skip some if busy, but I ALWAYS make sure I'm not cutting in front of anyone! I was waiting to tee off back 9 once but could see a couple approaching the 9th green, I waited patiently for them to putt out, only for them to then walk off as they were only doing 9 as well!

Not sure how "weird" I am,  but I play best either solo, or during high-pressure tournament situations  (which hasn't been in awhile since my game is in the toilet due to lack-of-time)

Two total different ends of the spectrum I guess,  but really it makes sense to me....  If I'm "focused"  I do well  (much like walking vs. cart,  but that's one of the other 100 threads)   If I'm playing in a casual group, especially if I'm playing with hacks,  then my game is crap.   I play solo/with good competition, and people want to snatch me up for their next golf scramble, and I play awful in scrambles because of the (usually) laid-back nature of them.   Heck,  I'm playing in back-to-back scrambles where I know the competition is going to be thin,  and I hope I can find a way to stay focused enough to play well.

    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
