Optimal Launch Angle and Shaft

4 posts in this topic

I've been taking lessons for the last month which helped a great deal, and yesterday was the first day the instructor gave me the green light to hit the driver so I can test things out using the same principles.  First swing was at 110, then I got more and more comfortable with the swing and started getting into a grove.  My question comes around how to lower ones launch angle without sacrificing the things one has been working on, and what that launch angle is.

My average distances with those swings were about 270 yards of carry, but I think with a bit more refinement, I can get more out of it.

The other question is the driver I was testing I was using a stiff shafted driver, and he stated im in that grey area between stiff shaft and x-stiff shaft.  Could that be having an affect on launch angle as well (forgive my ignorance, but i've always played a stiff shaft and this is the first year i'm really paying attention to investing in equipment).  Thanks...

Were you hitting range balls or something? There's no way you could average 270 carry with that low a ball speed. Even your best numbers shouldn't carry much over 250. 270 total maybe. Professionals on trackman average a 112 mph swing, 165 mph ball speed and 269 carry, with about 290 total, and they're fitted to get the most carry they can for the most part.

Your swing speed is really quite good, but your ball speed is pretty below average for that fast a swing. You're swinging the club faster than half of tour players, but hitting numbers most tour players get with a 3 hybrid. Either you're making really poor contact or something's up with the measurements.

I agree with lucius on the numbers. really high swing speed for an amateur but it doesn't really add up to make much sense. There must be some discrepancy with the balls used or the trackman or something like that...

Also, if you are carrying 270, I would forgo working on more distance and only focus on accuracy with all your clubs... if you really do hit 270 carry, distance should be your last concern atm, imo.

I was at the PGA Superstore and using the balls they had in the bays, so im not sure what make and model the balls are.  Im actually going to head over to Golfsmith this weekend for a club fitting and see what they say, and then do the same but at the other PGA Superstore in the area.  I want to see if I get the same results or different ones.  I didnt realize the ball speed was considered low, but in researching the internet for Tour players ball speeds, I definitely see what both of you are saying.  I'll get tested again and also get tested for a preferred ball and see what combination works best.  Thanks for both of your inputs as it's helping to open my eyes...

    • A figment of Bill Kristol's imagination.
    • LOL, I had to read it a bunch of times too.  Still not 100% but ... I think the confusion was brought in by their effort to minimize the severity of the "issue."  They could have just said "an issue that could prevent headphone audio controls from working," but I assume that they wanted to stress that the issue is minor and they're not always not working, only temporarily.   Funny thing is once they added to the "temporarily" they could have dumped the "not" - it means basically the same thing with or without the "not."
    • Entered the last week of the regular season on Monday.  It was also Senior Night.  Typically, it is a great night for us and did end good.  However, it was a rough start.  One of my seniors was pulled over driving to our course and had 3 other players in her car.  While she was given a warning, they got to our course late and so, were rushed to get dressed and on the course.  Naturally, she was shaken up.  My #1 was again medalist but we shot the worst score we have shot on they year.  We shot a 215 and that is terrible.  We lost to both opponents we played that night and have beaten both by 20 this year.  Today was our conference tournament.  It is held at a very tough course for girls, has a lot of sand and water and trees.  My #4 who is really my #3 but I defer to an older girl at #3 could not play since she was rushed to the emergency room.  She is very sick.  Anyway, my #1 shot a 77 on a windy cold day and was Medalist.  She out shot the next competitor by 11 strokes.  Her round was one of the most amazing rounds I've seen.  Our conference is very competitive in girl's golf and yet, the #1s from all the other teams could not keep up with her.  My #2 was also All Conference.  From there, we were terrible but in line with the other girls.  Still, when you are missing the young lady that has been averaging 94 per 18 holes, you are not going to win.  We didn't.  Regional Tournament next.  It is on our home course BUT we never get to play those holes.  We have 27 Holes and so, never are allowed on the first 18 due to league play.  I am hoping we get to play those holes now in practice since league is over.  Finally, Senior Night is a celebration of our Seniors.  The other girls bought them some very nice gifts.  It was also my birthday.  They got me an extremely nice Triad Golf Jacket.  I needed it today since we were in the mid 60s with a very hard wind.  I am so blessed to get to be their coach.
    • Wow! Hillary only got 2% on my quiz.  I knew I didnt like her, but I didnt think it was that bad.
    • I tried to find the debate, but all I could find on was some new reality show called "The Biggest Liar", where two people went after each other as hard as they could for 90 minutes.  When it was over, there was no clear winner, and the only loser was the American people.   I took the quiz, I side with Evan McMullin...........who the hell is Evan McMullin?????
