Hey all,

I've been watching the 5SK drills and practicing them frequently as of late.  However, I am having some inconsistency in my results that I can't seem to figure out.

I place the ball and/or board behind my ball 6 inches as directed and I've measured it so I know that is not an issue.

The issue is that when doing these drills I am not hitting the ball or the board and hit the ball much more flush than I have in the past.  However, when videoing and watching my own swing it is very obvious that I am still scooping the ball and not getting forward shaft lean.   Is it possible I am doing something wrong with the drill, another issue (such as wrong plane), or possibly just timing my scoop so well that I miss the training aids?

Thanks for any input.

Jeff

These kinds of drills doesn't work for me. I found that I just compensate to avoid the object and still flip. Only thing that somewhat worked was putting a towel directly behind the ball, but I gave up on the whole drill concept and moved on to something else. There is no guarantee you won't flip, even with balls, bags or whatever behind the ball. I ended up being more annoyed by the object being in the way on the takeaway.

What is your upper body doing in the video? I believe it's possible to cheat by moving everything forward instead of just your lower body.

I've learned this too from my recent golf lessons. My instructor has me using yoga blocks to help correct my over the top swing but I have learned subconsciously that I can still have swing flaws and not hit the yoga blocks. Even when I get them within an inch or so of the ball and have another down the line I can miss the blocks but the video shows that I still am coming in slightly over the top.

The drills aren't foolproof of course (poor choice of words but you know what I mean, I hope). The drill will work for many - perhaps even most - but if you find it's not working for you, it may be that your issues are not solved with this kind of drill. You may have a sequencing issue, or something like that.

Read the 5S thread on how to practice and start with shorter and slower swings just focusing on keeping your head relatively steady while really punching the balls crisply with this drill. If you can't do it at 50%, you won't do it at 100% and you should slow and shorten your swing to a rate at which you can achieve success most of the time, then when you do it 95% of the time, make it a little faster and a little longer. Lather, rinse, repeat until you're close to full swings.

    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
    • If PT doesn't work, then all other options (shots) are just temporary bandages of the pain. You may do more damage. Pain is the bodies way of telling you to STOP. Once you get rid of that, you are just now using an already damaged body part and put more stress and strain on it.
