A penalty shot on a 14 year old Chinese amateur?  Are you frigging kidding me??!!!  And then none of these sycophantic announcers have the balls to say how wrong it was because they don't want to get banned by the racist and fascist Augusta National administrators.  C'mon the kid is 14!!!  What id that 8th grade.  Pick on these other guys that are taking FOREVER to get a yardage, read the wind, chat with the caddie, ask the PATRONS to be quiet..If this kid missed the cut over this it would be a travesty.  I love the course and the back 9 on Sunday but these guys should take their bully act and stick it up their ass.

Completely disagree. His group was out of position, he was warned several times , continued to play slowly, and was penalized.

Slow play is a plague.

they haven't penalized anyone for this for years,  then they pick on the foreign kid who is 14 in his first Masters.  Why didn't they discreetly talk to Crenshaw, a former champ, and tell him to speed the kid up .  Utterly ridiculous.  A million ways to avoid this.  One ******* move, and they made it.

Did you actually watch him play? He was in a featured group on Thursday, and was playing slower than Jim Furyk after his 5 Hour Enegy wears out. He and his group were warned repeatedly (a bit more official than just chatting with Crenshaw), and playing partner Matteo Manassero even ran between shots in an attempt to not fall farther behind. To get a penalty for slow play you have to be exceptionally slow. Sorry, but Guan was. And I'm no Augusta sympathizer.

Yup.  The guy said he warned them like 3 times leading up to the penalty.

Again, PLENTY OF DOUBT.

Tiger's group was NOT OUT OF POSITION. Guan's group was. And never made up the time.

I'm sorry for typing in caps but you're clearly not going to actually read what's written in normal case, so I'm trying something else.

Also, they didn't need to discretely talk to Crenshaw. They DIRECTLY spoke to Guan and told him repeatedly that he needed to speed it up. Then they put him on the clock and he still kept asking his caddy for wind and yardage and club selection before pulling the trigger. Guys like Guan are the reason that it takes 6 hours to complete a round.

You mean the racist and fascist Augusta National administrators that wanted to expand the sport in China and created the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship who's winner (Guan) was guaranteed a spot in the Masters?   Why should any player, regardless of age be exempt from following the rules?  Should Augusta also give Couples extra time cause he's old?  Looks like you don't have all your facts straight or just want to bash Augusta National.

I was surprised they had the testicular fortitude to do it, and I'm glad. Why should he get special treatment? Who cares if he's 14, or an amateur or anything else? It's a single set of rules in golf and he broke one. It's no different than any other penalty. Should we give Freddie or Phil some mulligans in the actual tournament just because they're favorite sons? Even in the par 3 contest that doesn't fly unless you bow out of eligibility to win. If I'm not allowed to count gimmies and be creative with my scorekeeping and claim to shoot even par, why is he allowed to claim he shot +3 if he broke a rule to do it? Especially in the Masters; it's supposed to be about integrity and strength in the face of adversity, and being a gentleman. That means you don't try to wait repeatedly and excessively for ideal conditions which you have no control over if it disrupts your partners and the patrons. Which brings me to the next part of my rant:

You just don't wait for minutes at a time for the wind to die down. And then act like it's the official's fault he couldn't judge the wind. It doesn't work anyway, all it does is play with your head; all the wind is above the trees and doesn't really shift much in the course of a single hole. Hit the damn ball! It's not even a case of the yips or a mental wreck, he's ready and able to hit the shot but wants the wind to change. You're not playing for money, and you'll probably be asked back if you behave well.

Whether I agree with how the rule is written is another story. And it's certainly not the club's fault. If anything they were trying to give him several warnings. To not enforce the rule would be more unfair, ignorance is no excuse because they're all written down. Rory would probably be world #1 still if not for clearing sand off his line at Abu Dhabi, cost him 2 strokes and the outright win in the end. Did you see him blaming the grounds crew for the condition of the sand, or saying the fringe should count as the green, or saying they should change the rule because it's stupid? No, his reaction was appropriate: "Wow, I'm an idiot." His reaction to almost missing his tee time at the Ryder Cup? "Wow, that was close! I'm still an idiot but I got lucky this time." Not "I'm the world #1, they'll wait for me; they're too afraid of losing ratings to penalize me."

Did you hear his interview? Sounded like a spoiled brat to me. Wasn't dumb enough to really speak his mind but you could tell he thought he should have gotten special treatment. Only child, boy, rich parents. Spoiled, spoiled, spoiled. Almost Sergioesque if you ask me, especially insisting on the word "wind". The kid needs a new caddy though. This one should have been a lot smarter about managing his player. Any caddy worth his salt would have had the sense to give him a kick in the arse and get him playing faster, especially with 3 warnings.

Personally, I thought TW's shot hitting the stick was a lot more unfair than the penalty, but there's nothing to be done.

All I have to say is patrons...think about it - only 1 place calls fans patrons, and forces people, by threat of exclusion to call them patrons as well. These guys are the babies that have the football, and the big back yard, so you put up with the b.s. Enjoy the tournament. If Tiger had the sack his Dad meant for him to have, he'd tell them to take their jacket and eat it.

Being 14 doesn't get you special treatment... They probably have given him a couple mulligans too right? Maybe let him play from the lady's tees? I would agree that your whole argument just seems to be something against Augusta and doesn't seem to hold much actual ground...

The rules are clearly spelled out and several warnings were given before the penalty stroke was assessed.  I'm sure the kid is both nervous and awestruck to be playing in the Masters, but he doesn't deserve special treatment.  He's playing by the same rules as everybody else out there and is subject to the same penalties if he breaks them.

Can't believe not one person can see that to tag the 14 yr old with the penalty for slow play, which every other guy out there broke is ridiculous. This is the masters, right? These guys are invited. It's not the open with 144 guys. They tagged him on 17 fairway. What, they couldn't let him play out a hole and a half and deal with it later. As for Augusta, remember what they did to Gary McCord because he said bikini wax and body bags...patrons- that says it alll

Read what people are writing before continuing to post drivel, please.

Nobody else broke the rule.

Why?

No other group was out of position and thus put on the clock.

Yeah, they "tagged" him on 17... after warning him several times, and putting his group on the clock, and after he failed - after seven holes - to get back into position.

I'd argue that they bent over backwards to avoid penalizing him. To no avail.....

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
