Hey guys. I enjoyed the last outing and am about 80% certain I could play the 23rd if there is room. Any course is fine by me

Scratch that. My wife is out of town the 23rd, so I'm in for sure if you have the space.

Who am I missing?  Also, anybody bringing +1's?

OK, the update is that Big C is in, hacker has a +1, and there is a possibility that Brandon and Tristan could have +1's and Jeff could have +2.  That puts us at 14 "committed" with the possibility of 18 so far.  I like it!

Still trying to get a call back from Mark at Talega.

Mike, you want to call Encinitas Ranch and see what they say?

OK, here is the deal at Talega:

HI Andrew,

Yes we do have June 23rd open at this time at 8am.  For any Players Club Members their rate will be $75. It will be $85 for non-members. This will include cart but not range balls.

The Range is open early, however you must arrive early to allow time to be shuttled down and back up. It takes about 3-4 minutes each way, I would suggest players to show up around 7am.

You do not have to pre pay but we will require a Credit Card Authorization form to be filled out for holding purposes. Each player can pay individually if they would like to.

We would ask you to give us 14 days’ notice it the entire group is going to cancel, and 3 days’ if the number of players changes.

Thank you,

Mark Johnson | First Assistant Golf Professional | Talega Golf Club

990 Ave. Talega | San Clemente, CA 92673 | P: 949.369.6226 F: 949.369.6227

The deal with the range is that it's a shuttle ride from the course.  After 9am, you can drive there yourself, but early in the morning, the only access is through the course's shuttle from the pro shop.  Small bags of balls are $6, I believe.

If you guys like this idea, I am happy to book it, but if you want to keep shopping around for a better location, different course, or better price, I'll wait.  (Or if mvmac wants to take it from here and work his TST magic on the guy, we can do that too ;))

Is that course worth that price + range balls?  It looks like that is a $15 discount over their normal weekend rate per golfer?

$85 seems reasonable to me looking at the pics of the course and everything.

If there are no objections, I vote that this be our course.

Our next step is to talk him down on the range balls – one free bag! per golfer

Hmm, the gallery does look pretty good.  I'm intrigued by the 600+ yard par 5 on the back 9.

I don't know how to answer that one.  It's a nice course, in great condition, and $85 is pretty reasonable for better courses around here, so it's worth it to me.  On the other hand, I'm also happy on muni's with a few extra divots in the fairway and ball marks on the green for $50.  All I can say for sure, in a language you will understand, is that it's better than Haggin Oaks. ;)  (The only course in your area that I'm familiar with, lol)

Mike, I gave Mark (tournament coordinator at Talega) your name in case you wanted to take over from here and try and work some magic.

That hole is a beast!  It is usually downwind, yes, however it is not downhill, and here is the kicker ... you can't bomb it off the tee.  From the middle of the blue tees, it's roughly 265-ish to the end of the fairway before the hazard sneaks in on the right.  The the second shot is uphill AND even if you are on the fairway, if you are over on the right side of the fairway, there is a big tree in that hazard that might come into play that you either have to go over or cut it around.

The "funnest" hole for first-timers, especially if you are playing in a group of first-timers, is the 15th.  It's a fairly short, simple par 5, that plays easy IF you put your drive in the fairway.  Thing is, when you drive up to the tee, there is nothing around you except hazard and brush.  Nothing.  If somebody points you in the right direction, you can see a tall barber pole in the distance that tells you generally where to aim ... and that is it. :)

Below is an overhead of those 2 holes.  13 is on top, 15 on bottom, and both of those lines are roughly 265-ish yards long.  The line on the bottom points exactly towards the barber pole.  If you plan on hitting it longer you have to cheat right of that, but the fairway starts pulling away from you in a hurry, so that is a gamble.  The fairway left of the bunker sort of banks up so you have a bit of a backstop.

I played that course last year as a single, luckily I "paired up" with another single by the 4th hole who called it his home course.  He did tell me how to play those holes, not that my execution matched his plan....

It's a very nice course.

if anyone thinks $85 is too much money, please speak up!

i feel like the only thing you can find cheaper would be muni courses...  This is a good deal for OC golf on the weekend.  And last time i played they had a deal at the bar after the round where your first drink was like $1.50.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
