Looking for some input...

As I have pieced together my set I noticed that my bag seems to be getting cluttered with different headcovers.

I have looked at a few options like sticking with the OEM headcovers or going with something like iliac or Jan Craig...

Is it really worth it to drop the $$ on head covers?

I wouldn't pay ridiculous prices for headcovers.  If it comes with the club, then I'll use it or throw the set of my favorite college team.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

I don't own any from iliac or Jan, but those of theirs that I've seen have been beautiful.  One of these days.......

"Worth" is personal.   A silly extravagance to one person could very well be a valuable commodity to another.  If you want nice head covers that set you apart, and if you have the discretionary $'s to spend on them, then they're "worth" it to you.

rockbottomgolf or ebay has iliac wool headcovers for relatively little $$$. Looking on ebay, you can find Iliac leather - it's the colors you want that are difficult to find. (watch out for iliac "style" covers - not iliac)

As to the iliac leather, they last and seem less cumbersome. Wool does not last.

As to your question in general, it depends on you. I've purchased iliac leather for "wood" clubs over several years. They work well.

Another one to look at for a change is seamus head covers - check 'em out.

I think headcovers are definitely important.  Unless you happen to keep your clubs in a locker at your home course or club, and you don't have to throw them in the back of your trunk, truck, hatch, whatever.

I've had these for a few years.  I think they're great.  Not exactly hard shell, but their not just cloth either.  Also, you can throw them on the ground and usually can pop your club right in it.

SUMI-G dot com is the website.  And, I saw a few listings on Ebay recently as well

I like the look of the Wool ones I think I'm going to order a set..

I'm going to be using my current set for likely 2-3 more years and I noticed today on the course that having the flashy headcovers seem to warrant a lot of oogly eyes.. would rather invest in a set of Wool vs having a club stolen.

Headcovers are important to protect your clubs. Aesthetics are not.

Now if only I didn't have severe OCD.

what's wrong with the stock headcovers that come with the clubs? I find it easier to tell my clubs apart when the headcovers aren't identical...  When i got my first set I had a 5w and 3w with identical headcovers, and more than once grabbed the wrong club and over/under shot a green or landed short in water... ugh..

Bag:

One thing about using aftermarket headcovers instead of OEM is that why should you give these companies free advertising?  Is Nike or TM going to give you money for using the stock headcover and advertisting to the world that you use their gear?

If theyre not, I say use whatever headcover you want.

Like Desmond said, having a Cameron headcover on your Cameron is basically like advertising to thieves that you have expensive clubs.  I know a lot of people who use a plain, black putter cover simply so everyone doesnt know that they have a $300 putter.

Personally, Ive never pulled out the wrong club because there is a slot for each club and I know exactly what slot each club is in.  Not to mention you could just glance at the bottom of the club before you take your shot to make sure that you have the right club.

PM'd both of you the details..

To follow up on some comments... My bag is sorted by club so there's no way I'd mistake which club I was using. Also that's the whole purpose of the lines on the heads of the covers.

I did it more as a theft deterrent and to clean up my bag. I had 4 different head covers so this unifies it... plus as others have mentioned the stock covers are basically just advertising. I also use a subtle SC cover for my putter... not your typical one that screams SC.

I understand now why, was never thinking about theft... I usually put my raincover over my clubs if i leave them in the car, so it didn't even phase me.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
