Buying New Clubs 1" Long - Extenders?

Hello,

A few years back, I bought a set of used Nike Pro Combo Tours off ebay. They were 1" long and 2 degrees upright, which is what I believe to be my proper fit. Fast forward to now, and I am considering either re-gripping these clubs or buying new irons directly from Taylormade.

I have never re-gripped before so I decided to experiment on my rarely used 3-iron. I cut the grip off and I saw that my DG S300 has an ugly darker metal extender on the end. So, now I think whomever I purchased the clubs from on ebay had lengthened the clubs themselves. Probably not a big deal.

But now I wonder, if I were to buy a set of irons directly from an OEM 1" long - will the shaft be 1" longer or will the OEM just add an extender like with my current clubs? Anybody know?

Thanks.

If you buy new from a retailer there will not be extensions on the shafts. They will cut the butt end to specified length during assembly. I had a set of irons that I bought direct from Mizuno that were standard length. At a later time I was fitted for another set of irons and the fitting determined I needed +1/2" on my shaft lengths. Since I still liked playing the Mizunos occasionally, I bought some shaft extenders from Golfsmith and put them on the Mizunos. They played just fine.

The problem is swing weight/balance - typically, if you buy from an OEM like Mizuno, they will have heads that are weighted lighter for longer shaft lengths for better club weight balance.

I don't know if all OEMs use lighter heads for longer shaft lengths, but Mizuno does - they call it the "B" head

Thanks for the replies! I also sent the same question to Taylormade, but have not received an answer.

Interesting to know about the Mizunos. I always told myself that when I got into single digit handicap territory, I'd get some Mizuno blades. Will probably be a while...

I did not know that... My mizunos are 3/4 over standard, would they have the lighter head?
