I think he should use it at Merion, win, and then we can make Hogan like references. It would be huge for Merion, The US Open 2013 and 1950, Jason Day, and one irons.

Yes, that's true. I stand corrected.

Nice to see a tour player going back to a proper 1 iron.

I think 1 & 2 irons died out over the last few years simply because of club manufacturers' hybrid marketing hype, and for no other reason. Around the year 2000, new 1 irons could still commonly be acquired from a pro shop (I know, I demoed several and then bought one); these days....nothing. Do any of the mainstream manufacturers even make 1 irons any more, for sale to the general public?

I know that people love to trot out that hoary old line of Lee Trevino's about [paraphrasing] "God being unable to hit a 1 iron". Admittedly, I've never hit a bladed "butterknife" to which he was doubtless alluding (and I doubt there would be a happy outcome if I tried), but a late '90s cavity-back 1 iron? Sure. It's still in my bag (and going nowhere). Great off the tee for any par 4 with narrow fairways. I tried replacing it with an 18 degree hybrid for a while, and then got rid of the hybrid - nowhere near as accurate.

I'd like to see the 1 iron make a comeback. Hybrids are an acquired taste, and it would be nice to see quality iron sets that favour 3,4,5 irons (instead of their hybrid equivalents) include the option of also purchasing an accompanying 1 iron.

In any case, it will be pleasing to see a 1 iron in the hands of a player of Jason Day's talent.

Got one 1-iron, a thin Northwestern blade, that I never hit well, maybe because I tried to hit too hard.      Like to get 1 & 2 irons to go with my Edge set, think they'd be quite hittable, but they are priced at what a whole Edge set costs.

It'd be nice to have a 1-iron that is part of the set.

But yeah, if you have an older set of clubs, you can find a 1-iron.   Might have to pay $30-50 tho.
