  1. 1. Has Sergio Garcia officially taken this too far?

    • Yes. He shouldn't have said that.

    • No. That remark wasn't racist.

Apparently trying to blame Tiger for a bad shot and trying to make him look like the bad guy didn't garner enough sympathy for Sergio's liking.  Maybe making a borderline racist comment will work...

What he said was wrong and stupid. As a non-American, I feel "black people eat fried chicken" is an American based racial stereotype. In my neighbourhood the racial stereotype could easliy be "black people eat jerk chicken (or patties or goat roti)." KFC up here is just a fast food place, not a symbol of racial inequality and I'd imagine even less in Eupore.

People get so caught up over words. I wish as a society we could take ourselves less seriously and just laugh. That said, in the venue and manner he said it, the comment crossed the line. Whether it was stereotypical or racist is semantics and splitting hairs. Sergio doesn't need to try so hard to show his poor character. We've all seen it on display enough already. It annoys me that Tiger's race is always an issue.

Wikipedia definition of racism: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism)

Racism is usually defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called races and that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior or superior.[1][2][3]

It is a racist stereotype that all black people like fried chicken.  It's certainly not the worst one out there - it's not even really bad, if you ask me.  But by saying it, Sergio was making a reference to the fact that Tiger is black and making light of it.  Obviously Sergio understood what the comment meant or else he wouldn't have said it - it would've made no sense to say he was going to make pot roast, for example.  He just said it without thinking - if he would've thought about it first, he wouldn't have said it.  This is not to say that, just because he said this, Sergio is prejudiced against black people - but it is a racist comment.

These days, making a racist joke of any kind is a major faux-pas so I'm sure the punishment will fit the crime ten times over.  It will be fun to watch Sergio squirm over the next few weeks and into the US Open.

Amazing Whacker is correct, this is a racist remark, but that does not cast Sergio in with the lot of white supremacist types and such. With his media experience he should have known not to say this and he is going to have to deal with this for years I am sure. Ten times over indeed.

Europe is struggling with racism issues that Americans don't see unless you are a soccer fan. Teams are getting in trouble for the behavior of fans, matches are getting stopped due to racist chanting/singing from the stands. Games are having to be played in empty stadiums in order to punish teams and fans. To my limited knowledge this is mostly happening in Italy, but there have been issues in Spain and France also. Even issues with players and referees in the English Premier League made the news this year.

Hopefully this incident helps raise the visibility of this low level racism that many people want to dismiss but does add up to a cultural acceptance, and it should not.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

Absolutely.

To me this qualifies as a racist comment. I dont know Sergio Garcia personally so I have no idea if he's a racist or not. It takes way more than this for me to paint someone as a racist. But his comment was racist. I have a right to feel this way and please sir do not tell me I need to relax.

My point exactly. Making a racist comment/joke doesn't make you a racist, it makes you an idiot. Believing that racists comment/joke makes you a racist. I doubt Sergio is a racist. I suspect Sergio is an idiot.

Edit* and with that said, I believe I am done with this thread and incident. I don't expect anything of substance to be added to this debate.

Certainly think it is a racist comment but does it make Sergio a racist? I'm not sure about that. Someone on Morning Drive commented that Sergio has been around a long time and if he was a racist this would have been snuffed out long ago. He may be the most immature 33 year old out there and he will regret this for a long time to come. Just ask Fuzzy.

TBH, this may be good for Sergio. Maybe he can wake up and realise he needs to STFU some times and just play golf

I've officially gone to not caring about him to not liking him, totally classless.

Tacos originated in Mexico, not Spain.

Paella and tapas are traditional Spanish foods.

It is only an issue when stupid ignorant people like Sergio make it an issue.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Stupid and racist...Sergio might have been right that "Tiger isn't the nicest guy on tour" (not many GOATs are also the nicest of all time) but Sergio needs to stick to golf and avoid attempting ad lib humor at press conferences.  Sure he is sorry he said it, but the damage is done.  Tiger is definitely the one coming out of this feud smelling like roses, Sergio, not so much.

    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
