Ping G25 irons

Anybody playing them, would like some feedback.

I picked my new irons up yesterday from the new Golfsmith Xtreme store here in Myrtle Beach. Ping G25 irons, 4-UW, +1" long 4* upright...$699. I took them to the range for about an hour yesterday. LOVE them. It's hard to explain how much more forgiving and solid they feel compared to my G2's I was previously playing. I hit some of the best iron shots I've ever hit yesterday. The only thing I don't love are the grips. The stock Ping grips are quite slippery in the humidity. **Edit** I have an 8:01am tee-time tomorrow. It will be my first chance to hit the irons out on the course.

I have a set of G25 irons I purchased a few months ago and they are the best irons I've ever had. Easy to hit, accurate, and good looking (at least to me).

I also owned a set of Mizuno JPX 825 but never liked them. Too heavy and too hard off the face. I sold them.

However, my ball striking has improved, and I could not resist the temptation of buying a set of I20 irons. I just picked them up.  I will take them out next sunday. I have no idea which I'll prefer, the G25 or the I20. One will be my main set and the other my back up set. Even if I end up prefering the I20, I will keep the G25.

Sweet looking set. I prefer the graphite shafts which adds another couple of hundred to the price. Golfsmith only offered me $160 for my G15 which are in perfect condition. I guess I would have to sell them privately. I'm not ready yet to pull the trigger but I feel it getting closer especially with everything I read and hear about them. I play a blue dot, graphite shaft and Golfsmith had one, a 7 iron, in the store which I hit. Felt really good but I was only hitting into a net. But they really got the ball up quickly which is what I look for. My birthday is coming up in August so..... I can always keep my G15s as a backup set as well.

Quick update on this thread...I took the new G25's onto the course for the first time today. They are long and straight. My previous clubs were hitting a 7 iron about 155. On 2 occasions today I had between 170-175 to the pin, and hit my new 7 iron about 5 yards past the hole. I also hit my 8 iron pin high into a 163 yard par 3. I am in love with the irons. I carded SIX (3's) on my scorecard today with this irons, something I'm not sure I've ever done before on a par 72 layout.

Quick update, I have played two rounds with my new  I20 irons. Compared to my G25 irons these are my observations:

In general, there is not a huge difference. They are very similar.

I20 have an actual D0 swingweight (as specified). G25 have an actual  D1 swingweight (D0 is specified) so G25 feel a tad heavier (I am able to notice it).

I20 slightly lower ball flight but same distance as G25

I20 slightly less forgiving than G25. Flush shots feel great but mishits not so great.

I20 are aesthetically different to G25, but both look good to me.

G25 longer irons slightly easier to hit than I20.

Only noteworthy difference is that with G25 my shots usually went slightly left of target and with I20 my shots go slightly right of target. Could this be because I20 have less offset?

I'm not sorry I bought the I20. I was very curious about them. However, I would not recommend the move to someone who already has the G25.

I will continue using my G25 until my ball striking improves a little more and then move to I20.. I will keep the G25 though. They are great irons.

ive gone the other way had the g25 and just could not get them right had 2 sets one with lighter shafts and the others slightly heavier I just did not like them mentally then put a set of i20's in and I love these irons further ball flight but also straight at the pin got my slight fade back which I lost with the g25 each to there own. I have to say I had the i15 before and these are a miles better club looks and feel.

Do you think your better ball flight with the I20 has something to do with the fact that they have less offset than the G25?

Have may set on order. About a week away. Went into my local Drummond (Australian) store. Had my heart set on some Rocketbladez but thought it best I go the whole hog and try out a heap of them. The first club I hit was the G25. Felt beautiful first up. Also hit the Cobra Amp, Rocketbladez and Callaways. Ended up going the Pings and funny thing was the Rocketbladez felt the worst. Will fill in my thought after I have them and have given them a road test.

Got my G25s on Tuesday night and played yesterday. Did not hit the ball well but that was all me and not the clubs. The few that I hit well felt and flew very well. I also had a lesson on Tuesday and was working on a slight swing change so that did not help matters, and some days i really have a tough time getting my lower body moving, Heading back out today after some range time last night and hopefully will correct some of it and have a better experience with the clubs.

I have a set of G20's (which, for the record, I also love) and found that I didn't love the grips so much.  I put a set of Golf Pride New Decade mid-size grips on and it made a world of difference.  The grip size is, of course, dependent on your hand size, but my meat-hooks aren't all that large really and the mid-size are much more comfortable along with providing getter grip.

The biggest thing I notice between my i20's and my old clubs is the consistency of the shape and distance.

MYRTLEBEACH , What shaft was in your G2s' and what shaft is in your G25s;? I have the G2s' with CS Lite stiff ; +1/2 inch and 5* upright and hit my 7 iron about 150- 155 as well. I'm closing in on 63 years and have lost a few yards and the possibility of 10 or 12 more yards per club has me contemplating an upgrade.Thanks.

Just played my first round with new G25 irons 5-U. Love them! Straight, nice feel, nice sound on impact. I'm very happy with them.

LOL yes, I picked up G15 17* G20 20* and G20 23* hybrids along with a G15 driver. Pretty sold on PING quality. I was very intrigued by the TM ATV wedges, so I went 56* 60* with those. But very pleased with PING. I like the iron type hybrids over the wood type. That's why the G15, G20's plus saved lots of $$$ and got great clubs.

      Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.

      Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.

      I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!

      Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
