Tip from a hitter

5 posts in this topic

Hello everyone!

I am a very right side dominate player. I like to hit with my right hand instead of swing with my left. With saying that, my misses have been the occasional hook or straight push. I would have days of great compression and others that the ball felt very clanky (if that is a word) off the face. I couldn't seem to pinpoint why I could knock down flags one week and struggle the next.

Here is what I found. If my right arm either gets ahead of my body turn or lags behind, I struggle. I feel that the angle that I set at address between my upper body and right arm HAS to be consistent from takeaway all the way through impact. Keeping the right arm and body turning together forces me to get through the ball with my right side and prevents me from getting stuck or slowing my body through impact and then the arms keep going causing a hook. This will also force you to make an actual turn in the backswing instead of cheating with the arms.

I know there is nothing new in golf, but for you hitters out there, try to focus on the dominate arm and body working as a unit. See how it works for you! Good luck everyone!

Genuine question:  the word "hitter" was used twice.  What constitutes a hitter?  And what is the opposite?  Is this a right-side/left-side feel thing?

I consider a hitter to be someone who "hits" at the ball with their right side versus swinging through the ball with the left side. I think you have to decide which one you are, and work on training that side of your body.

I am not a student of Geoff Jones. To be honest, I had to google him to see who he was. I will be doing some more research on him and find out what his swing theories are.

What you were saying is very similar to what he teaches.  Reverse K set-up, stays in reverse K on backswing, feeling like you turn with you right side.
