Thanks for the tips. I played meadowlark 3 weeks ago and it was terrible. It's literally 5200 yards from the tips and it took us nearly 3 hours to play nine. The back nine may be brilliant; I wouldn't know because we bailed after nine and I won't know because I won't be back. Edit: 0715 tee time made at Mile Square (classic course). We've got two players if you want to join.

Thanks for the offer! Sadly, I have to work tomorrow at 8-ish so I will not be able to make it. Good luck!

I'm +1 for now... May have +4.  Still ironing out the details with some peeps.

The +1 is Mike who played in the Mile Square and Talega outings.  The other three are guys I''m still waiting for confirmation....

I wish ... but no-can-do this weekend.  Parents are in town and I'm golfing with my dad and FIL tomorrow afternoon - you know, in the middle of this "perfect" weather we're having right now.

0708; 0732; 0740.  Cost looks like $85 +/- a few.

I think I'm going to play (though it will be about a 1:45 drive for me).

No I'm working Monday, but thanks. I actually booked a solo slot about 2 hours ago because the slots were filling up and green fee went up $10 from yesterday. I rarely play a course well the first time out so I really want to get a round in here before the October outing.

Howdy folks, k-troop just told me about this group and I just joined.  I am located in Apple Valley, which is in the High Desert (Mojave Desert) near Victorville and Hesperia.  For the last couple of years my primary home course has been Apple Valley Golf Course.  It was formerly a private club, Apple Valley Country Club, but was bought out by the city.  It is a nice course and in the best shape of the courses in the area that are open to the public.

Which is too bad because another course in the area is Hesperia Golf Course which is a really exceptional layout but in somewhat of a state of disrepair.  In the early 60s there was a PGA event held there for a number of years and there are pictures all over the place of guys like Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Snead, et al.  Until a few years ago the course record was held by Gene Littler.  I played it a couple of weeks ago and the condition is improving but they still need to do some work.  Unfortunately when the city of Hesperia bought the course they decided not to get a golf management company but instead are having the Parks and Rec Department do the maintenance.  And they don't get the difference between a golf course and a soccer field.

http://hesperiaparks.com/facilities/golf.php

But since AVGC is in such better shape I do most of my playing there.  It is a nice course which measures 6805 from the tips (72.0/125).  I generally play the blue tees which measure 6477 (70.5/121).  Both play to a par of 71.  Prices are pretty reasonable.  Top price is $45 on weekends before noon.  But if you are 60 or above it is only $30.  That includes cart, although they do allow and even encourage walking.  The cart is $14, so walking the top rate is $31 before noon on weekends, but only $16 for seniors age 60 and over.  I usually play in the late morning when the rush is over and pace of play is beyond excellent - for example I played 18 this morning as a single in just under 3 hours.  A typical time for a 4-some would be 3:45 to 4;00.

If anyone is interested in coming up for a weekend outing I'd be happy to host it and provide a post round barbecue (or other food - I love to cook) at my house, which is only about 19 minutes away from the course.

But the real reason I wanted to post is because on September 22, 2 weeks from today, at 9:00 AM they are having a free short game clinic by Dave Stockton.  Dave is from the Inland Empire and I think we all know what his qualifications are - former PGA Champion and short game guru.  The city just changed golf management companies and the new company arranged this to get the course some exposure.

The web site for the course is http://www.avcc.com .

If anyone wants to come for the clinic we could get a tee time (or more than one if there are more takers) for afterwards and play a round.  If anyone is interested just respond to this or send me a pm.

Anyway, I hope that at some point I will be able to play in some of the other outings that folks in this group organize.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Rich - in name only

Hey Turtleback, I might need to take you up on the golf/ BBQ invitation. I think most of us would chip in for food and drinks. Are you going to the fall outing?

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
