What is your opinion on the "Breakfast Ball"?

If you "explain yourself plenty of times", it's discussion, but if Fourputt does so it's tiresome and "displays an arrogance that is counter to genuine discussion"?    Huh......

Regardless though, I'm struggling to understand the dislike for the term "variant of golf".  It seems accurate to me.  A game of half-court 3-on-3 hoops isn't basketball, but it's certainly a variant of the game.  By calling it that, I don't think anyone is disrespecting those who play that particular game.  Why the animosity directed towards someone who calls something like a scramble a variant of golf, which, it seems to me, it is......?

nope, if I play 3 on 3 or 1 on 1, I tell people I am playing basketball. Commisioner Stern has never had a problem with me saying so. If people must use the term variant of golf than I expect people also to tell everyone they are playing handicap golf not real golf when they don't complete a hole or otherwise modify their score due to ESC. Real golf doesn't allow ESC, only real handicap golf.

You only apply ESC if returning the score for handicap.  When competing, your score is your score, it's the number of stroke, plus penalties, that you actually took while on the golf course.   You are really reaching now to try to justify your position.

Huh?  ESC has nothing to do with your score in a round of golf.

You can tell people anything you like.  No skin off my nose, but that doesn't make it so.  And FWIW, if you look on page one of this thread, you'll note that in my happy little group, we let those that want to hit a breakfast ball do so.  If they want to play OB as a lateral, they go ahead.  Pick up that 3-foot 5th putt, Hell yeah!  Hell, I encourage it all, especially if it helps with the pace of play.  In those cases, they're playing a variant of golf......and having fun doing so.  More power to 'em!

I couldn't disagree more.  Nothing he said is unreasonable, and it is actually very pragmatic.

Do you not see a scramble as a variant?  How is it arrogant to say that?

Yeah, I'm admittedly trolling now. But if a buddy calls and asks if you want to play golf with him? You know he takes a mulli here and there, plays OB as lateral and so on and so forth, but you enjoy playing with him. In your response to his question, do you say no, but I will play golf while you play a variant? When you hear him tell someone else he enjoys playing golf, do you chime in and correct him and say you mean you enjoy playing a variant of golf? Do you compliment people on their nice round of variant golf, when they tell you they had a personal best? I seriously doubt you do, but that's how you guys sound here.

No, I would very much still go play with him.  But if I knew he posted an official handicap I would not consider it accurate nor put much stock in it.

If he did it playing a variant of golf (re:outside the rules) then I would discount it. But then again, the people I know who play golf would never claim a personal best unless they played the round inside the rules of golf.

lol....right after I wrote it I decided I was going to say it to a buddy of mine next time we play. He and I are huge smack talkers. We both run marathons, his PR is about 15 minutes faster than mine. Last time I told him I was going to run, he said "you mean fast walk."
