Question about older Project X 5.5 rifle shafts...?

I have an 8 year old version of the Project X 5.5 rifle shaft.  I'm not and never have been fully aware of what the shaft is designed to do.  So, my question is whether this shaft is supposed to promote higher launch / higher ball flight of mid - to - long irons?

I played today and hit what I thought was a perfect 6 iron and looked up to see my ball balloon into the sky.  Needless to say, it came up short!  If that is typical of these shafts, do the newer Project X shafts do the same?  I swung the Mizuno DNA stick and the Project X was one of my recommended shafts.  I'd like to get away from the balloon ball.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

The "flight plan" for the PX Rifle shafts (non-flighted) was this: Ball got a little extra boost on launch, but then flattened out for a more penetrating flight (as the ads say) at its peak height.

Now, the shaft is only part the equation. We also need to know...

  • What clubhead speed did you generate with the shaft?
  • What type of clubhead did you have?
  • What type of ball did you play?
  • How did you set up to hit the shot?

Also, you are talking about a single 6i shot that ballooned and came up short. That's not nearly enough data to make decisions on reshaft. If you have just started playing the irons, you need to play a couple more rounds with them. Then, you can chart the actual patterns on ball flight.

Good questions and very relative in order to provide a detailed response.  However, I was looking for more generalities about shaft's - PX vs. the field?  You partially answered my question with PX's marketing phrase for their shafts.

As for me, my ss, ball, etc..., I don't know how fast I swung on that particular shot, but the DNA stick averaged my 6i at 83.  My current clubs are Titleist 704CB's, custom fit 8 years ago.  I play ProV's and set up to hit a straight shot.

I recognize several factors will affect ball flight. I by no means am a consistent ball striker and do tend to hit higher shots - early release problems.  This particular shot was into the wind - slight wind - and once it started to climb, it ballooned.  As my original post, the shot felt flushed.  I'm not trying to diagnose my swing or shafts, but am looking for insight from others on what new shafts are out there for consideration.  I've posted here that I am looking to replace my sticks.  I have my eye on Mizuno MP64's.  I will get fitted, but am looking to hear what shafts are being used by forum members and why.

83* mph is decent clubhead speed for a 6i. If you have early release problems, this would account for the ball being high and short. But, hitting into the wind - and climbing the wind wall - would produce similar results.

As a 10 HDCP, I suspect you are trying to fine-tune your game and go to single-digit. You might want to take a lesson, and see if "early release" actually hurts your swing. "Early release" can be a vague term, as some players with earlier-than-average release hit the ball fine. "Early release" mainly becomes a problem when you have no real lag on your downswing, and the clubhead already has passed your hands at impact.

I'm not familiar enough with iron clubhead speeds to know what 83 MPH* means comparatively. But, you might need a stiffer shaft to help keep the ball down. The Dynamic Golf shafts have a low launch profile, if that's what you need. But, be aware that the PX 5.5 is about 10 grams lighter AND slightly stiffer than the DG S300 shafts.

Recommendation: Lead off with lesson, and follow up with equipment tweaks.

I have taken a lesson recently and plan a follow up. Unfortunately, the release was not the object of concern at the prior lesson. I"ve had multiple lessons over the years and have a video library to fall back on to remind me of what to and not to do. My club release has always been a problem. I do drills all the time to work on proper lag/release/ball striking, but my swing DNA seems to be tough to change. Therefore, I turn to my equipment to assist in my compensation game. I plan to get new sticks. The pro giving me lesson's also does fittings. He's indifferent to me changing clubs, mostly because the suggested shaft is the one I'm currently playing. He doesn't seem to think I'll notice much difference. I'm just wondering if Project X has enhanced the performance/playability of their rifle shafts in the last EIGHT YEARS through new design technology? I am of the opinion Mizuno's MP64 will be a better club head than my 704CB. If the shaft is a better version, then it should be a nobrainer!

Rifle is a type of shaft: slightly higher launch, lower overall ball height. Main tech changes would be in quality tweaks.

Big PX change has been in adding graphites, and introducing the lighter steel versions, the PX 95 Flighted and the PXi.

A couple of years ago, Project X (now owned by True Temper) split out its Rifles from PX line as a separate type of shaft.

Read about it here: http://www.truetemper.com/pxshaft/rifle.asp

Your teaching pro is indifferent to changing clubs. I sense he wants you to create more lag in your swing. Keep working on the drills. Does this sound like what your pro wants you to do? ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Yngq6Gn20

If you have an ingrained release problem, it will take you a few weeks of "doing it right" to change your DNA. So don't give up, you're closer than you think.

Thanks for the articles.  I will certainly give the true temper link a read.  The lag video is a good one.  I've got a lesson on dvd that's very similar.  The one lesson I had with current pro focused mostly on my turn and hand position at the top of the backswing.  Long story short, I'm coming off a 2 year layoff from golf.  It appears some old, bad habits have returned, but not as bad as before.  I've put a lot of mirror time in and feel major improvement has already been made.  Next lesson is coming up.  The hand action is more complicated than proper turn, so hopefully, he has a plan.  We'll see.

As for the shafts, I guess I will leave that to my fitting session and test as many as are available.  Good thing is, this fitter has an outdoor facility.  I like that much better than hitting indoors, into a net.  The only concern is fitting new clubs while undergoing swing work.  Thanks again.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
