Ended the season at a 16.6.Β

On the plus side, I started the year at 21.8 so very happy to see the lessons and practice time starting to pay-off.Β  Had a great stretch over the summer where I felt I was really hitting the ball well (for me) and the swing changes I've been working on for the last 2 years felt a little more ingrained.

On the minus side, scoring was very inconsistent over the course of the season.Β  Looking at the 10 worst of my last 20 recorded scores, my HI on those rounds were a 23.9 (a 7.3 stroke swing...yikes!!!).Β  If I had to point at any one aspect of my game that seemed to fall apart more often then not, it was my driver for sure.Β  I went through a really bad stretch with it toward the end of the season and only recently have gotten it back under control again (just in time to put the clubs away for the winter...haha!).

The official season is over for us here (although I'll probably still get another round or two in before the cold weather really kicks in).Β  Looking forward to continuing the progress next season...more lessons, new irons, play more courses, with a goal to get my HI down to the 12-13 range with a lot less round-to-round variance.

The good news, I got to play 7 rounds in Pinehurst and Southern Pines last week. Β The bad news, I had only 2 reasonably good rounds, and 5 pretty good rounds were bumped off of myΒ record. Β The result, up over a full stroke to 5.5. Β Ah well, what goes down must come up. Β Or something like that.....

I am stuck here until 03/16 and then who knows what will happen with the rules changes. I don't intend to join leagues next year and most of my golf is played after work (alone). 2015 may be my last year for an official handicap.

Interesting, the decimals. In America, when someone asks what's your handicap, do you say "11.4" or "11", for example?

Here in SA we don't go into decimal points. An 11.4, for example, will become 11Β and an 11.6Β will become 12.

Here is a screenshot of handicaps displayed when you do a search for a course, in this case The Els Club at Copperleaf:

In the US, our handicap on any particular course is calculated based on the handicap index (HI) multiplied by the Course Slope Rating divided by 113. Β The Slope Rating is intended to measure the difficulty of the course for a "Bogey Golfer" relative to the difficulty for a "Scratch Golfer", and can go as high as 155, I think. Β My 5.5 index gets me a course handicap of 6 at my home course (Slope = 132). Β When I'm asked, I usually just say 6. Β From what I've read, parts of Asia and Australia may also use the Slope system.

Aye, obviously a much better system than what we have, we only have a course rating which is purely based on length if im not mistaken. So 69, 70, 71 etc.Β

They want to adopt the USGA system here, and even though we only have around 400 golf courses in SA and it shouldn't be difficult, what with typical African inefficiencies it could take a very very long time for this to realiseΒ

Apart from that, I think handicaps are calculated the same way - best 10 rounds of last 20 rounds. Average differential times 0.96.

Not to worry, you'll be using something more like the U.S. system soon…

Geek question...

Slope = Bogey rating minus course rating multiplied by 5.381 (for men)

Why did they use 5.381?

I would have done it this way. Β I'd assume a course rating of 72 and a bogey rating of 90 as an average with the 18 stroke differential. Β Then I'd have 100 be my base slope. Β So 100 divided by 18 = 5.556.

But they used 5.381. Β 100 divided by 18.6 = 5.381. Β Hmm? Β Can't figure out the logic.

Yes, I'm a geek.

They didn't choose 5.381. That's just what itΒ worked out to. A course of what they deemed average difficulty was 113. That came first, not the other way around.

16.9 - this is the 3rd time I broke into 16s in the last 12 months.Β  I hope it sticks this time.

With the winter rain, roughs are deep, up to 12 inches high, at my home course.Β  Once a ball goes in, it's usually ball not found (as bad OB).Β Β  I believe I am losing about 4 strokes per round b/c of ball not found.Β  This could be why my HI goes higher during late winter.Β Β  Anyone else in CA goes through the same HI swoon during late winter?
