I dont mind playing with cheaters because I have no problem calling them out on it. I dont mind high handicappers either and you can say that you play fast, but how can you play as fast as a low handicapper when you are hitting 20 to 30 more strokes per round?

Easily.. it doesn't mean your just chunking your ball and walking 50yds for your next shot... it could mean maybe on average you're taking an extra putt on a hole, or having to take an extra wedge shot from around the green.

Well, an extra putt OR chip on 18 holes doesn't add up to 30 strokes does it?

I was mainly talking about 25+ handicappers.

Well, an extra chip around each green adds 18 strokes. Add in a couple of extra putts here and there, and you hit that 25 number pretty quickly.....

my point exactly. it really doesn't slow up the round at all. usually slow when the player is hackin his ball left and right and then taking a few putts each hole. i see where everybody is coming from though.

I pretty much only play with friends and family, most of whom I know are honest and most of whom know the rules of the game. Plus, because we do not gamble when we play and none of us post or brag about our scores, it is of very little consequence. When I go out to golf, my only objective is to play better than I did last time, and that is why I don't cheat or shave strokes, because that way I am only cheating myself. I will admit that our group usually allows each player one mulligan per round, but in the rare event that I use mine, it is always announced immediately after my shot...usually in my follow through, to be honest. I also do not allow myself to use my mulligan on a putt or as a rescue from a bad lie. I try and reserve it for one of those times that I just have a brain fart and mishit a ball that is laying clean on the fairway or something like that.

What bothers me is when people don't know the basic rules of the game. My brother-in law takes full, grounded practice swing in sand traps. I don't
really consider it cheating because he just doesn't know any better. Again, though, since I'm not trying to beat him when we play, I just let it go and don't charge him the penalty.

I play this game for fun and enjoyment. Were I more competitive or if I were gambling, I would probably care more. Instead, I just play by the rules and try to challenge myself alone.

mulligan, did you say mulligan? don't let the golf gods around here(cough...iacas...cough) hear you say that, he'll break out the rule book on your rear faster then a worm burner gets to it's spot on a fairway....

I don't really care what other people do if I'm not playing against them.

I do believe cheating by using mulligans and other things (conceding three-footers) is only cheating yourself, and I sometimes care enough to point THAT out, but pffft. FWIW, and to answer the actual question, I'd rather play against neither. If forced to answer, I'd rather play against a high handicapper if it's a match, and I'd rather play against a cheater if I don't care about their match (assuming, of course, that the cheater isn't also a high handicapper, which would be a double whammy).

As long as they guy isn't hunting balls, taking 5 practice swings and is ready to hit when he's up, the high handicap does not need to be slow.

how many courses would still be open without high handicappers?

Depends on what you mean by "high."

Sometimes I'm a "high" handicapper

HAHAHA I had to, it was so open!

-_-

but seriously, everyone has to start somewhere. I like playing with High-handicappers who want to learn. There was a day when everyone on this forum was a high-handicapper. Except for Iacas who was holding a putter when he left the womb.

High handicappers are fine as long as they keep up the pace. Especially when they are out to enjoy the round and not stress over every shot. Cheaters are extremely annoying. But the worst are the sand baggers in my men's league who carry a high HC, but magically have their best rounds in tournament play.

    • I agree with @pganapathy about removing some clubs. I would recommend removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons for now. Play with Driver 3W 5W 3H 5H 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW ( you don’t have listed) 52 56 Putter Th 60 wedge can be difficult for new players, but you could keep that If your 3H is adjustable, increased the loft to be more like a 4H. Play with these on course and see if you can get a feel of the actual yardages for each club and especially the gaps between them. It may take 10 or more rounds. A par 3 course is helpful for determining the gaps in the irons and some woods too. A device like a Shot Scope H4 can really help give you your actual yardage on course.
