The left arm (RH player)

I was about to comment on some site link dropping poster's post about improving your swing, but it was deleted. Anyway, he was stating and stressing a "perfectly straight" left arm on the back swing, like most ppl do. I've seen many videos of top players with what seems like a locked arm and others with bends. I'm starting to wonder if it matters not either way. I have a slight bend in my left arm. my right arm is squared off, elbow is down and arm basically in.. Im beginning to wonder about that too but let's talk about the left arm for those of you with an opinion on it. what is the theory/function/ur thoughts behind it and ur experience with hitting locked as opposed to not?

The left arm is kept "straight" (not locked) all through the swing until just after impact when it begins to fold. as Hogan writes in his book:

"In order for the club to travel its maximum arc, one arm must be extended at all times."  he goes on to say: "In general, then, the left arm should be straight, this doesn't mean that it should be locked at the wrist or elbow or be in any place as the arm of a robot." unnatural straining isn't t at all necessary, or desirable.

Now, that being said.....I find that for me to maintain a straight left arm, I have to consciously "stretch it out" away from the body during take away.  I use Steve Stricker as a model. I am sure though that after it reaches a horizontal position hip high, that there may be a slight bend in my left arm, but it is still fairly straight. My hardest thing is to get that straight left arm up above my shoulder and still keep my right elbow tucked. Maybe I need to work on the shoulder turn, I don't know.

Left arm shouldn't be "locked" but relatively straight to slightly bent.  We don't want the left arm to excessive bend because that would make solid contact much harder to achieve.  We establish a "radius" at address and if we change that relationship, we have to compensate in other ways, the most common is releasing the wrist angles early.  This might help on how to keep the arms from excessively bending on the backswing.

this is basically what ive read too. like a minimal bend of a 3-5 degree bend is acceptable - maybe it was 1-3 i forget however, i keep hearing over and over from ppl to keep it completely straight; theyve read it or some instructor taught them this. perhaps its a translation error in what most ppl think as straight. i mean its confusing when you look at ernie els robot shaft for a left arm - talk about straight. watching hogan though his bend is apparent when he starts his downswing, at least in my eyes it is.

I agree with Mike.

Put another way:

Bend the arm if you like - it adds another lever to the system and thus is capable of adding power. It does so at the expense of consistency of radius, and thus, consistency of ball-striking.

So often it becomes a question of "Is 5 MPH faster clubhead speed worth mishitting the ball 90% of the time?" Most often the answer is no.

    • The length of the driving range is limited by houses and a road. So the ball flight is way shorter as with normal balls. So what reads 200 yards on the driving range in reality is much shorter. But I think this does not really matter for now. What I found out is the following. When doing my grip I twist my left wrist extremly to the right. At impact this delofts my clubs a big time. The head is very closed. The iron 7 I was talking about at least becomes an iron 4 loftwise ( i am judging this by eye on comparing to my other clubs). So now numbers maybe begin to make sense. Loftwise we are talking about an iron 4. What happens to the driver is that it even gets a negative loft which explains why balls just go up in the air with a very long tee. The 3 wood on the other hand gets the loft the driver should have. So this makes the longest shots. This is also explains why I had a very hard time hitting my hybrid. This hybrid (4 iron) becomes something like a club with loft 0.  So probably I am twisting my wrist to much ( there is a special term for this hand position which I don't remember). But this gives me 2 advantages. 1) I don't slice the ball with the driver 2) It is easier to hit down on the ball with the iron for me. Before this I had the wrist turned to the left (I think this is called neutral grip) which did not work at all for me. So I think in general this hand position helps a lot when not overdoing it. The V of the left hand index and middle finder should point to the right shoulder as far as I know. My V pointed right of my shoulder. I will tweak this position a bit. I think I am just overdoing it at the moment. I am pretty sure the iron 7 distance will get down when doing this and the driver distance will get up. We will see.

How many times will Trump say "Believe me!" and "It's like incredible" the word "tremendous" and "Crooked Hillary" How many times Hillary will dance around the e-mail scandal? Will Hillary blow up? Will Hillary challenge Trump to do arithmetic? Or will that be out of bounds? It will be interesting to hear how lowering taxes on the rich and lowering corporate taxes will balance the budget - I've heard that whopper before. Will Trump challenge Hillary on the 2nd amendment? Will Hillary challenge Trump on his pandering to the religious right with the "freedom of speech and religion" proposal to allow discrimination against GLBT people.  Will either of them persuade me to not vote for Gary Johnson?
    • Haha, I've done that while walking.  The thing that made it embarrassing for me is I did it 2 or 3 times in the same round before I finally started catching myself.
    • I think there's a large old thread exactly like this already actually, just need to dig it up. Anyway, weirdest I've encountered was people rolling a cart.  I've also hit 2 geese myself (both with drives).
    • A few weeks ago I stumbled across something that seems to have helped me a great deal.  Towards the end of a round I was fatigued and playing kinda sloppy and when addressing a ball my left leg popped into a locked straight position and I said screw it and swung away.  I ended up smoking the ball crisp and straight.  I tried it off and on several times during my next round and had similar great results.  Now I've been doing it all the time and it seems to be a genuinely good thing. I did a internet search of locked legs when I got home from playing today and all the links seemed to refer to locking the back leg and implied it was generally a bad thing.  There didn't seem to be any mention of locking the front leg.  This makes me think I might be teaching myself something unnatural and bad.  I pretty sure I'm maintaining the locked leg (back leg stays loose) all the way through the swing but I'd need to make a video to know for sure.  Anyway, my question is... does anyone else do this?  If not then does it sound like something that would be considered bad golf posture?
