The best irons on the block?

I'm currently using Ping I-3, white dot irons. I really like them, they are forgiving (duh) and pretty damn sweet off the club. However, they're wearing on me.. after all, they're old. The grooves in my PW are caving in, turning it in basically a hunk of club. The 8-iron is following as well, and same with some other clubs. All and all, I'm looking to get a new set of either a better club, or the same heads, just brand new.

I've talked with people who've told me most people find the irons they like and stick with them throughout their career. I know that to be true, however, I swung my friends Rocketbladez irons.. and wow. They were sweet. Popped off the head, really smooth through impact ... all and all really nice.

So this is with I come to you guys. I'm making a poll to find out what you guys, with experience with the clubs, what clubs are the best. I'm throwing in some Nike VR Pro Blades as well and others, as I had those on mind.

I've been using the AP2s for a while and like them a lot. However, I'm moving over to Mazuno MP 68 or 69. Those things are GORGEOUS! Hit them today and I gained a half a club in my mid irons and up, and I was landing them within 10'. I love the thin sole, they lie perfectly on the ground for me.

BTW, if you hit the ball on the clubface, blades are not as hard to hit as everyone seems to think. You feel the difference, no doubt, but a miss is a miss, whether there's a cavity or not.

I've had the Nike blades for about 6 months. Upgraded from Taylormade rac lts. Added a clubs worth of distance with my 4i maxing out at 200 metres. Not that I'm an expert at shaping, I can hit a pretty consistent push draw. I have quite a high ball flight but can knock it down in the wind (my home course is a seaside links). Even got suck back (excessive check) on a high 4i from 200 one time so they definitely hit and spin on quality greens. Would buy again.

I'm just getting advice. People told me to get the Nike Covert, but when I was setting up my driver, I went with the RAZR Fit Extreme because I really liked it way more than the Covert driver.

We are all individuals and a club that may be a perfect fit for one person's swing may be completely wrong for another's swing.

Play what you feel the most comfortable with, after all your the one who has to dance with the girl you brought. What are the best irons is basically a loaded question that opens up the shooting gallery for an array of opinions with no correct answer. I personally only buy Titleist clubs anymore for the resale value I get back and for the fact Titleist doesn't make a huge amount of changes from one model to another so pretty easy to pick up where you left off. Clubs that move from old set to new set and I never change is the Putter and my scoring wedges just regroove them nothing spins like a seasoned wedge.

I really like my Ping G20s, but they aren't on the list, so..... But seriously, there are a lot of high quality clubs out there, and it seems to me that an awful lot depends on your game AND style. Being a low handicapper doesn't automatically mean you ought to play blades, but being a low handicapper probably means that you will be much more sensitive to how specific clubs feel, and only testing will tell you that.

Id say get the most forgiving irons that you can stand to look at.  Ive got an old set of Mizuno blades from the mid '80s that I keep around and theyre beautiful but Nike Slingshots are whats in the bag because theyre easy to hit.

Do you disagree? My point was, and remains to be, that what other people prefer should have no influence on his decision. He needs to get a fitting and decide what he likes. My "/thread" reference was in jest.

Two different style clubs, Cavity vs Blade you will gain distance with Mizuno from the different trajectory an AP2 has a lower center of gravity and like all CB irons get the ball in the air faster with a higher launch angle. Took me a while going from 695MB to AP2 and at first I was thinking WOW did I screw up getting these things. I love my AP2 irons now just had to figure out that you have to be very disciplined with your tempo and these clubs do the work..You can work the ball a little more with blades and I am waiting for the 714MB to come out but the AP2 is a great club I just hit them high.

To be fair, getting fit and deciding what he likes are two different things. You can get fit for any set of irons, doesn't mean you necessarily like them. FWIW, I don't see anything wrong with the OP getting input on irons people like and don't like. If someone's got rave reviews of a set of irons he might not have thought of, it's good to hear it. It's not like he's asking us to make the decision for him, just provide input.

Well he only got to be Emperor for one day, it's not that big of a deal, we're all taking turns this month. I was hung-over on my day, didn't even post so that was a bit of a waste, oh well, there's always next month. :-P

Looks like "Other" is the winner.  No surprise there - do you really think that there are only 4 types of irons out there?

My irons are a set of first generation Titleist AP-2's, and I wouldn't trade them for anything else that I've tried out since I bought them 5 years ago.  I don't say that they are best or worst, they are just what works for me.
