There are countless deer on the course I play, I've had to wait for them to get off the green before I could hit my approach shots and sometimes get within 5 to 10 feet of them walking down cart paths. Since I usually play play in the evenings,it's about dusk when I'm putting the bag in the trunk and I can hear the coyotes laughing in the distance in the woods. The guy at the course is usually leaving when I am and he's said they have found deer carcasses strewn through fairways when they get there in the mornings, coyotes getting their bellys full of  venison after everybody leaves. My father-in-law lives on Masonboro Country Club in Wilmington ,NC and it's not uncommon at all to have gators on the course, I left my tee shot about 5 feet from an 8 footer last time I played there, keywords 'left there'.

Back in Florida, in the evenings, I would take a couple clubs and walk and play some holes. There was this red fox that was eyeing me from about 100 yds. When I walked away it started following me. I walked into my neighbors backyard and around the house out of view. Ever so often I would spot this red fox in the early evening, while I was playing and walking the course. One NIGHT I was walking the dog along the road and he spotted this red fox(probably the same one stalking me) between the houses of our neighbors. The fox spotted us too and he actually started walking towards us. My dog, a pointer mix about 75 lbs., started barking and snarling and the fox turned and ran off. Scared the heck out of me. What concerns me the most, is the number of rabid raccoon and other wild animals reported on the news. Most little critters aren't aggressive. But, if they're diseased, hungry or protecting their young they're very unpredictable. I say, better safe than sorry. Be careful out there. The guy video taping the two alligators wrestling was not using good judgement, to say the least.

I guess that as a long time backpacker and wilderness rambler throughout the Rockies, I have a very different attitude toward wild animals.  As a rule they are about their own business, and as long as we don't interfere, they won't bother us.  Virtually every wild animal I ever got very close to ran as soon as it was aware of me.  I've seen bears in the wild many times and they always run as fast as they can go.  Even the time my friend and I jumped a black bear fattening up on huckleberries during late summer in the Mission Mountains of Montana, the bear left its lunch and ran.  We spooked a mother and 2 cubs on an island when we were canoeing the Quetico in southwestern Ontario - they just hit the water running and man, can they put up a wake!  I'm not sure that we could have outrun them with two of us paddling in a canoe.
