Just a quick piece of info. There was course built in the 7 Hills area, in Henderson NV called Rio Secco. It's intent when it opened was to cater to the high rollers who were staying at the local casinos.  Mainly the Rio. Butch Harmons school of golf was also there, and on occassions some of his students, including Tiger would be on the course.

Since the course was purchased via "Public Lands Act" the course had to be made available for use by the public. The owners put a price of $900.00 per round for the public. Their way of keeping it sort of private. If you lived in the 7 Hills area, which I did, it was $750.00 per round. I never played there.

Someone filed a class action suit over the high green fees for public use. The judge who presided over the case, after listening to both arguements, decided to play the course himself, and make his decision. After playing the course, he fixed the greens fee price at $400.00 for the public.

Fast forward a couple of decades +/- . 4  weeks ago, 4 of us played there, with an AM tee time, for a special foursome price of $40.00 each, which included carts.

My job makes it hard to play during the week so I'm mostly a weekend warrior. I usually spend between  $45-$65 for a good course (18 with cart that is).  There are some higher end public courses $70- $150 in my area which I rarely play.  I'm not far from Erin Hills or Whistling Straights and they are over $300 so we have many options.

In mid-Michigan, we have several courses within about 20 miles of my house.   Most are under $30 on the weekend and cheaper during the week.   We have cheaper spring / fall rates and senior discounts too.   My membership is all inclusive with range access for $900 / yr.   Can't beat that.     There are many cheap rates on Golfnow and many times the private courses even allow non-members to play.   I've only paid over $30 once in the last 4 years.

Here in Helena, MT the two public courses charge 30-35$ to walk 18.  Our one country club charges around $45, I haven't played there for a couple years so things may have changed.

If I want to drive an hour and a half I can play the Nicklaus Old Works course for around $60-$95 depending on the time of year, day of the week, etc.. Includes Cart and range balls.

I usually only get to play on the weekends because of that job thing always getting in my way! :-)

In Central Mass I am looking at 45 -100 for 18 with a cart.

My home course is 55 and I can usually get on any weekend with short notice.  Its nice when you know everyone that works there and they call you by your nickname.

I looked at a couple of the local park authority courses, and they run around $50 walking on a weekend, while one of the nicer daily-fee courses is about $100, including the cart.

I had initially started typing a response, but then realized it was almost identical to this one. The rates here are very seasonal. And tourists pay twice as much as locals. I could pay $30 to play a course in February and a tourist will pay $120 to play it 2 weeks later in March.

I will be visiting as a tourist in early August.  What course would you recommend I play?

In the Virginia Beach area you will pay anywhere between $30-$100 for an AM tee time on the weekend at a public course.  During the week you can sneak in an afternoon/evening round for ~$30-$50 at the same courses.

My course in the UK is £360 annual 7 day membership. A pay and play membership is £99 per year, which means you pay £10 a round. A member of the public pays £14. Pretty good I think

So to help out with the currency translation: $479 for an annual 7-day membership, $132 for a pay-and-play membership where you pay $13 per round.

Yeah, that's pretty reasonable.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm pretty lucky in my area when it comes to golf courses. being where i live a lot of the golf resorts/actually really nice golf courses are owned by the gov and charge a very reasonable rate. there a 4 of those courses within an hour and a half of me 2 of them 15 mins in my area and its about 80 dollar green fee and line 35 bucks for a cart which is a lot but this is NICE golf, but the real way to go is a membership for me a junior i only pay like 200 bucks for my membership and my brother who is in his twenties get an "intermediate" which is around 700 and a normal membership is like 1200 or something. theres also some crappier course near me which are not near the quality as the ones i mentioned before but there decent. theres a nine hole course I'm also a member at which cost like 125 for the membership i golf there a lot with some of my buddies that are not as serious into golf. the membership for a junior i already said and a regular membership is like 550. and a green there is like 19 bucks and 12 dollars for a cart. that course or others like it in my area are not near the bang for ur buck as the government owned ones but a lot of people golf there too that can't justify the price.

Here in Michigan, I can golf any course within 20 miles of me for almost under $30. We do have a couple higher end courses with can range from $50-$80 a round. Golfnow has some great deals to were I can get a round of 18 with a cart for $12.

I believe this is an interesting subject, because golf prices around the world differ so much. For example, play in Portugal or Spain and they charge a lot, primarily as they see it as a rich man's sport, rather than a game for the masses. In the UK for someone who lives locally and is under the age of 65, a 7 day membership varies from about £500 to £2000 per year, with an average of about £700/£800. Of course, there are exceptions. Nearly all our courses are privately owned, although the vast majority welcome pay and play members. The normal cost of a round for a pay and play golfer is about £20-£50 depending on various factors, but again there are exceptions.

So, what about where you live?

It really depends on where you are in the US. I am in Albuquerque NM. The private club I am at cost between $300-$500/month depending on your age. I just became a member at a public course that cost $8000 for 6 months of play, or you can pay by the round for $200 each. I only play at these two courses so I am not sure of the cost at other courses, but I know local muni used to have $30/round with cart and hotdog days!

The golf community in Scottsdale, AZ  that my husband and I are looking to purchase a home at has a $75k buy-in and a monthly fee of $1400.

Prices near me vary greatly. I play a lot of county and state run courses. Moderate price and $4 per reservation fee. $36 to walk.

Prices in the Las Vegas valley range from $10 to $750 + Hotel Stay. Depends on the course and the time of year. Middle of summer is the cheapest.

Around Grand Rapids, MI, I would say prices start around $20 to walk 18 and then can go up into the $60-70 range. Tons of options, though, depending on what you are looking for.
