Obviously this is indefensible but not only because "fans" shouldn't be trying to influence the outcome of a non-team sport.  Even if you personally deeply care about the final position your favorite players finish a tournament in, the vast majority of the millions-strong audience just wants to see how the best players in the world can execute on the most difficult types of shots, this being a prime example.  Now we have selfish idiots on the course demonstrating they are no more interested in elite golf than watching the opposing team shoot free throws at a basketball game.

I think we are all waiting for someone in the gallery to deck "this guy", but in the absence of such swift justice I propose a bounty system: Take a collection for a significant reward that goes to any group of people that grabs the next person to intentionally distract a competitor, pins him down and wraps his mouth shut with in duct tape.

I think that the reward should also extend to the idiots who yell stupid things right after impact just to get their voices on TV.

There is a lot to be said for bringing back the time honored tradition of tarring and feathering and then being hauled off the course on a rail. :naughty:

I don't like Sergio, i think he's a whinny little brat who happens to be pretty decent at golf, but anybody who yells in the middle of someone's backswing like that should be ejected from the tournament. I am pretty sure if you did that at Augusta, your ass would be out of there. I can handle the, "Get in the hole", while the ball is in flight. Maliciously yelling in someone's backswing, eject them from the course.

So do we know what happened to said fan? I would hope that if he was standing in a crowd that someone would point him out. I would have no problem with a player confronting and then physically assaulting a fan that does this.

He should be escorted off the premises. One thing is to yell after the strike, but during a swing is just stupid.

ID the little bastard then sue him for difference of one stroke in the final payouts.  Could prove significant depending on place.  I'm not an advocate of lawsuits, but make an example for the rest of the idiots that might consider it.

Too many environmental concerns with tar.  Shave him bald and super glue one of those rainbow afros to his head.

I agree with everything you said, except that I personally can't handle the "get in the hole" yelling idiots- this includes any of the stupid yelling that's going on constantly. I admit it was original and funny the first time someone yelled it, but it's time has passed. Long passed. Kick them out a few times and it will stop pretty quick.

So, what was the result? did sergio hit the green, get it close to the pin, fly it over the bunker into the pond?  did the 'moron' really influence the match? didn't tiger's dad attempt to condition tiger to various distractions, like  big noises, tossed paper balls, etc, so tiger could learn to shut the stuff out? maybe sergio learned the same.

And hey, if we want to grab the 'moron' and get violent, how will you identify him? finger pointing by the mob? tv cameras on every player every hole or have all spectators wear tiny recording mics?

i would say that for those big big bucks those top pros gotta learn to take some grief, after all, 'it's only entertainment'.

These guys need to be ejected. Take their ticket.

Same for the idiot that got Zack Johnson's attention on the 18th green with whatever he said. He said something derogatory enough that Johnson stopped, glared at him, tapped in, and then after his playing partner tapped in they BOTH went and verbally confronted that guy. The PGA really, really needs to start pulling the passes for these people. 99.999 percent of the pass holders go to see the players, they don't go to see loudmouths calling attention unto themselves. Start pulling passes already.

yeah, but what if its at the end of the day of the only day that theyre attending, then what?  thats why i say the player should confront them on the spot and assault them.

A case like this is certainly reprehensible... BUT, and be honest, when you are out with your weekend match do YOU get the idyllic conditions of other people staying absolutely quiet? Or all traffic on the local road detoured to keep the noise down? Too many times you still see a player totally go nuts because some guy sneezed 3 holes away and the player just happened to hit a bad shot BEFORE the guy sneezed. When I learned the game, one of the first things my Dad told me to learn was CONCENTRATION and be responsible for your own mistakes. As I grew up and moved on playing with our buddies, the name of the game was "Cut-Throat Golf". There was little attempt to keep quiet- in fact it was to be played while holding normal conversations during swings, discreet coughs during putts, etc.. were all fair game- BUT, there were some exceptions- no throwing things, or doing that blood curdling scream in a backswing and the like. It made us better players buy forcing us to worry about OUR swing and keep other things out of our heads. If any of these players showed up a few local munis, they'd be amazed that we "average" guys can even hit a ball with all that goes on in the real world.

Yea, but your 1 shot isn't going to cost you thousands of dollars is it? Most tour players don't play on weekday work leagues were the other golfers are bit rowdier. But i never played with anyone who would purposely cough in a golf swing. If that person did it to me, we would have a problem. Golf doesn't need that type of actions, and it is seriously goes against everything that golf is about.
