Real problem hitting my 3w & 5w from the fairway.

I just cannot get any where close to consistent hitting my 3w & 5w with the ball on the ground.  I am fairly confident when the ball is teed up, but when I'm in the fairway, light rough or even at the range I am at best 50/50.  Either a good straight shot or a little flub or top.  With my 4i - 9i and my 20 degree hybrid I am about 80/20.  I can't figure it out, is it a mental thing?

Thanks,

Charles

A while back I was having similar issue. No matter what I did I couldn't put a good swing on a wood from the fairway but got off the tee without trouble. I can't say whether it is mental or not in your case, but for me the biggest problem was in ball position. Next time your at the range, try experimenting with it.

That crossed my mind.  Where do you set up?

I used to set up about even with the logo on my shirt ( if that makes sense to you ) but I've since moved it forward about half an inch or so so its just inside my left heel.

I'm currently having same problem, I either hit it well or top the damn thing 50/50, for me it's also in the ball positioning, it's amazing how moving the ball an 1" towards the middle can make all the difference, I've ditched my 3w for now and just concentrate on the 5w, I think it's also a confidence thing, I was starting to dread pulling out the 3w, but my confidence in the 5w is coming back now so might bag the 3 next month!
