I usually try to be pretty modest, but I'm so excited about my round today that I just feel the need to share it with you guys. I've been playing my local course a lot lately, almost everyday actually, but today I was able to slip away from work a little early and decided to make the drive to a course that I haven't played yet this year which is quite a bit tougher than my home course. I only had time to get in 9 holes, but I have a tournament coming up at this course and felt that a quick practice round could do me some good. I played from the blue tees (71.6, 132) which for the front 9 comes out to 3,324 yards. Long story short, this was the best ball striking day I've put together all season. Everything seemed effortless, and both my driver and iron play was very solid. At the end of the day I came in with a 34 (-2), hit 7 out of 9 fairways, hit all 9 GIR's, and had 16 putts. I missed a pretty easy 10 foot birdie putt on the first hole, but also made about a 20 foot birdie putt on #4 that I wouldn't expect to make often, so I consider that a wash. Aside from that, there weren't really any shots I look back on and think man, I cost myself a stroke there. That doesn't mean there wasn't room for improvement, but I just don't feel like I cost myself any shots. I have another practice round scheduled for Saturday morning when I will be able to get in a full round, and then the next weekend starts a stretch of 3 straight tournaments, the first of which is at this course. I really hope I can take this round and build off of it going into these tournaments... I know there's not really much of a point to this post, but I just wanted to share with you guys. I'm pumped!

Way to go! Just remember what you did the night before and the amount of sleep to prep your body and mind for another great round

Appreciate the compliments guys. I've had a few under par 9-hole rounds this season, with 34 tying my best. All of those round have come on my home course though, which is shorter and less difficult. Also, I obviously play that course much more frequently, so I was excited to be able to translate the same game that I play at home to a more difficult and less familiar course.

Still waiting on my first under par 18-hole round. I've been close, but just never have been able to close it out. I really think yesterday was the day if I would have had time. I think a lot of it gets credited to a higher level of focus since I was playing alone and also walking the course. I always play better when I walk because I have more time to clear my head and think about the next shot. Playing alone also helps me focus too, but I do prefer to play with friends. Just enjoy the company more than shaving a stroke or two I guess.

Your quote says it all....don't try to kill the ball.

Have fun...........

Went back for another round after work and followed it up with a 33 (-3)... This course really is much easier than I remember, as long as you stay out of trouble. Lots of water, OB, and waste areas that can lead to a big number on a hole, but if you keep the ball in the fairway it's quite easy. It's not unreasonable for a really good golfer to be -4 through the first 4 holes. After that though it starts a pretty tough stretch... I ended up making it through 15 holes before it got dark and was -4. Something about this course brings out the best of me I guess lol, or maybe it's just a matter of confidence when playing there.

In the "What would a PGA tour pro shoot at your course" thread, someone was pointing out that the pros may not do as well as we would think because of the poor putting surfaces and bad lies they would get compared to a PGA course. Well I think this holds more merit than I originally believed when participating in that thread. I thought my local course was one of the easier courses in the area, but after playing this course a couple time this week, the pros would absolutely tear it apart. The fairways are better, the greens roll better, and all of this has contributed to me being able to score "below average" rounds, despite the course rating being significantly higher. It's amazing how much better my putting and wedge play has been this week while playing this course.

I need a bad round to bring me back down to earth. Otherwise I'm going to keep paying to play this course instead of going back home where I'm a member.

Curious- were there no par 3s or do you consider a par 3 GIR as a fairway hit (or did you simply make a typo)?

It was a typo. I just noticed it on the card that I kept. There are 7 potential FW's and I counted two misses. Somehow I translated that to 7/9 on the card and then typed it here. It actually should have been 5/7. Good catch.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
