I loved Arrival. Annihilation is a good one. Event Horizon is also one of my classic sci-fi favorites.

And now for something completely different: Happy Gilmore 2.

I watched HG1 as an adult, and it was alright, but probably would have been better if I watched it as a kid. HG2 had some good parts, but overall I wasn't a big fan. I knew there would be pros in the movie, but I imagined some cameos, not them being straight up actors through large parts of the movie. They're not actors and it showed. I could've done with a lot less of them and John Daly was maybe the best of the pros. The Maxi part was boring.

First, you have some great choices in there.  Event Horizon remains a birdie movie for me.  It still finds its way onto the October options as Halloween approaches.  It fits well.

I continue to forget that Arrival, when being referenced, is not the Charlie Sheen movie I saw in middle school.

Lastly, what rating are you giving HG2?  Was it a par?  Bogey?  I gather from your review it didn't earn a hole in one on a par-4.

(I have yet to decide how I'm prioritizing that on my movie queue, and if I should even bother, so I'm looking forward to reviews here)

I'm giving it a bogey. It's a silly movie and did what silly movies do, so a double is perhaps a bit harsh, it had some good things going. And it's a movie about golf.

De Niro is brilliant.  The series (6) is very well done and full of suspence.  It will keep your interest peaked until the end.

I give it an eagle!

I watched this one. I enjoyed it. I wouldn't go "eagle" but it's a birdie.

I watched season 1 of FUBAR and am in season 2 right now. It's an easy par. Not great, but good.

Earlier today, I saw the latest Naked Gun movie.  I give it a birdie, which I don't do lightly for this one;  it isn't as good as the original television show or the first three movies , but it is a fun movie and had a two minute segment where I had trouble breathing from laughing so much.

However, it clearly wasn't the same crew as the originals, but it has some of the things you'd expect from them, including fake credits.   It's good in its own right, but if you want the originals sense of humor, and you're reading this review here, remember that Leslie Nielsen also wrote two golf books.

Tron: Ares, I give it a par. It is an enjoyable movie. The visuals, sound, and music were amazing. The story is generic, but I wasn't expecting something spectacular from a Tron movie. The acting was good, not out of this world. I recommend seeing it in theatres, because it's a movie the deserves to be seen on a big screen with good sound system.

Yesterday evening, I watched The Gentlemen, a Guy Ritchie film from 2019 that I evidently missed on first pass.  It's a par, but it's a par on one of those long par-4s where the par feels like a birdie.

It's in a similar vein to some other movies like Lock Stock, Snatch, or Layer Cake (which was Vaughn, not Ritchie).  If you liked those, I think you'll like this.

A friend suggested it a few months ago, and I started it one night and couldn't finish because I was having trouble following.  In retrospect, that was an artifact of trying to watch the movie too late in the day.  I started the movie at the beginning earlier yesterday and got to enjoy the full thing very much, but unlike some other movies, I encourage anyone to watch this when they're awake enough to catch which characters are which.  In my case, watching with subtitles helped me understand what some characters were saying.

    • They haven't played as many matches together as people seem to think they have, and when they did, they were some of the top five to ten players in the world at the time.
    • If you are that far out of it, how many stars could you possibly have?
    • There is a lot more match play played in the UK. One of the reasons for that is the different golf model over there. Here in the US, people either play public courses at a dollar cost per round or pay astronomical membership fees to belong to a private club. Even then a lot of the privates still have significant per round costs through caddies/carts. In the UK, most people belong to a club, the cost of which for a year is broadly similar to a month or two worth in the US. When your cost to play the round you're playing is basically $0, it's a lot easier to accept hitting half the shots in alt shot or picking up once you're out of a hole in matchplay. If you've paid $80-100 for the round you're playing, it's a big ask to hit only half the shots. Consequently matchplay is much more common over there and alt shot is also. There are some clubs (Royal St George's and Muirfield for a couple of famous examples), which are basically two ball courses. If four of you want to play there you have no choice but to play foursomes. Can you imagine that being accepted in the US?
    • The NBA is trying to prevent tanking to get better draft picks.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48763248/adam-silver-says-nba-present-3-2-1-lottery-proposal-curb-tanking The concept is that the bottom 3 teams would have worse odds than teams 4 through 10, who would have equal odds. In addition, they could be penalized by having their draft position moved and also monetary fines for tanking.  My concerns are the following. If you are out of it, it would be detrimental to have your stars injured and not develop younger players. Which would naturally cause more loses.
    • I could see that being the stress of the playing partner. I would be interested to see a deep dive into how he performed.  I do wonder the difference in record of best ball versus alt shot. In alt shot, you basically are taking 50% of his impact and adding in 50% of another golfers impact. So naturally, his total effective strength would be less.  That could be the case.  I think it might be more due to the style of golf they grew up playing. If in the UK, foursomes is more common, then that is an advantage. In the USA, I don't think foursomes or even best ball is common at the high school or collegiate level. It is more match play and stroke play. Maybe the PGA Tour should petition the NCAA to change their formats to include more Alt Shot.
