Driver at the left edge of the green.

If for some reason you're feeling peckish about doing that on the first tee (or you can't carry those bunkers 98 times out of 100??), something just short and left of the bunkers to give you a huge target and a reasonable angle into the green.

Either play can work.

I'd do A.

Yeah, in your case this is a pretty easy call.  But I'd make you play from the blacks, in which case, it's about 270 to carry the middle bunker, so I'm guessing you're taking hybrid towards the left side of the fairway. :)

Draw is my normal driver shot, so I would line up just left of the leftmost fairway bunker and bounce it up to the neck area of the fairway. Would probably get about 220 yds. carry going uphill, plus decent roll.

From there, I would have a half wedge or maybe an 8i chip and run into the pin, using the long axis of the green.  I like the view from the fourth picture which the OP posted.

I am a little curious why some people are choosing to hit a club to the left of the bunkers.  I'm not saying you guys are wrong, but when I look at this hole, it seems to be screaming at you to either lay up short of the bunkers or try and go over them.  For me, this area is off-limits:

I totally agree....when you look at it from above, it's a wide open hole asking for a beating.  There is no need to challenge the bunkers with irons/hybrids...LOL   This hole is wide.....pop it over and providing you don't hit a foul ball....at worst, you are looking at a greenside bunker shot.    Pretty easy hole...IMO

Based on what I see, there isn't much reason not to hit it up somewhere around the green from the tee.

Not really.  What the overhead shot doesn't depict very well is the slope short and right, as well as the mounds left.  It's a very small and narrow green as well.  Your safe landing area if you're going for the green is a box about 20 yards wide and 10 yards deep that angles from front right to back left.  The shot from those bunkers is very tough, as you'll be laying blind about 15 feet below the putting surface.  The layup is a wide open shot, though.

It depends on how I'm feeling about my woods that day. If I'm hitting it on the screws on the range, I'd go for it with a smooth three wood power fade up the left edge. If not, I'd play an 8 iron out to 170. Which would leave a full sand wedge in.

I would kill to be able able to hit my 8-iron 170 yds. I would probably play this hole with either a 3H or a 4-iron for 170 yds, and then leave myself a lob wedge away, and hopefully I'm accurate enough to set up an easy birdie putt.

Little hybrid to the left of the trouble. Wedge it in for at worst an easy 2 putt par. That's never a bad way to start a round of golf!

That's the smart play, #2 at my home course is similar 290 but has more bunkers and goes up a pretty severe incline, I have hit driver on it before but the fairway is pinched to about half as much as this one but I think I would play it the same especially being the first hole.

First hole of the day I set my Bloody Mary down and let the big dog eat! I'd go driver to the left side and draw it in to target (lefty). Then after my shot never turns I use my wedge and get 15 ft. 3 putts later I'm scoring my 5 and saying, "glad I got my bad hole out of the way" :)

7i and a knock down 52 degree wedge. If I'm feeling really good (Which is rare on a first tee that isn't my home course), I would hit 3H in and pitch on. I'm protecting par on this hole for sure.

Driver to left edge of green.

I get lucky about every 4th try, just enough to be obstinate about it every single time I play it.  1 in 4 times, my friends and I think 'cool shot', 1 in 4 we think 'wow, lucky it wasn't any worse than that', the other 2 of 4 we laugh at my foolishness and I practice getting out of trouble.

half way through the season, likely wise up (or if my short approach game improves) and hit 4h off the tee - it's straighter.  Trade the birdies, pars, and triple bogies - for more consistent pars......

It depends on a number of factors in my opinion!

I will break it down on how my thought process would go if faced with this (no particular order of steps, just have to consider all)

1. Can I hit it 265? ( front of green)

2. Is this my first hole of the day or 10th? I would probably GO FOR IT starting out on #1, where if it is #10, score would come into play more for me.

3. Am I playing this hole one time? or is it a tournament where I have to play it multiple times?

Odds are you will score better laying up 4 times with a 4-5 iron rather than using driver to go for the green 4 times. (percentages)

Any questions?

For me, the pot bunker is key to playing this hole.  If the hole is 274yds and it's 256 front, it's probably only 220-230yds to carry the small bunker.   If a player can comfortably carry that yardage, I think the play is to fly it and get up around or on the green.  There is plenty of room left of the big bunker so I would definitely attack this hole and play for birdie.  I'd either hit 3-wood or driver depending on the conditions of the day.   Because I am a lefty, I'd probably aim at the left edge of the small bunker and draw it towards the green from the tee.

First off, I hate you all. I hope you get leprosy inside your duodenal canal. This has nothing to do with me being in the northeast, unable to play, stuck inside the butthole of winter. ;-) Second, I'm hitting a 5 iron to the fat part, and then a wedge. And then three putt for bogey.

It's a driver with a fade starting out at the left hand side rough for me. With the hope of a clear path for a short chip to set up my 3 putt ;) I would like to say a 4i or 5i and then wedge but I have to be honest and I couldn't resist a go at getting it up there. I'm slowly learning better course management, I would like to be "able" to start using an iron on these holes in a years time. Nothing stopping me, only myself!

    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
