My Swing (billchao)

Nice day for practicing. Still working on the same stuff. Minor change is I have a tendency to keep the front knee more extended so I added a little knee bend with my club fall feel at the top. Gives me the sit move/downhill slide piece I was working on last year for free.

Been working on these pieces for almost a year and still none of it is automatic. Where’s my magic pill golf swing tip?

Spent an hour on Trackman today. I must have messed something up because the session didn't show up on mytrackman.com. I was expecting it to automatically upload like myflightscope.com, but apparently not. Good thing I took pictures of everything.

It's still the middle of winter so my swing isn't quite "ready" yet, but some observations:

  • Confirmed my fitting results. I launch all of my irons slightly too low with too little spin.
  • 1 in 5 shots was a push. Playable from 8i and down, but too far from grouping from 7i on up.
  • Stock flight is basically a straight draw. I can tell right from impact if I pulled it.
  • Pretty good with partial wedges. Was able to predict carry distance within 5 yards based on previous mapping.

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with the information at this point, if anything. I really just need to maintain the swing for now until winter is over. Definitely have a face to path issue that needs correcting based on the amount of curve I was hitting.

Gave this some thought today and it has to be a club face issue. Path is good (3.5°) but I’m starting the ball mostly straight or even left of target. So the solution is to get the face more open at impact. It will probably add a degree or two of launch and more spin in the process, addressing those issues.

My hands have always had a tendency to roll over around impact. The timing of that action is a problem. Going to work on the feeling of holding the club face open and see where that gets me.

Practiced today. Set up a stick straight down the line from my ball and tried to hit to the right of it. Didn’t do so well. Hit the stick a bunch of times, actually. Really only started the ball right when I toed it.

Tried a few different things; could only consistently do it on chips. I even went as far as to set up with the club rotated almost 45° open at address and only managed to hit those about 8” right of the stick.

At this point I’m not sure how to proceed. Even opening up the club a little at address feels weird in my hands. Maybe I should just get the new clubs that help me launch the ball higher and live with hitting straight draws.

It probably wasn’t 45° but I rotated the club a lot, soled it, took my grip.

Try getting into your impact position, rotate the club open there, grip and then return to address. This will show you how to set up to start. I worked on that last year with Stephan.

That’s one of the things I tried.

I didn’t want to upload 100 pictures from my Trackman session, but I figured a few would give a pretty good idea of my game, so here it is:

Not great, but all five shots finished left of my target which means I need to aim at the right edge of the green and I’d be in decent shape.

This is where things get a little hairy. That’s a pretty wide shot zone that’s kind of difficult to plan for. I guess I have to aim at the right edge again and accept that I’m going to miss on both sides of the green. Smash factor seems a little off here; I wonder if it under-read my club speed somehow.

This is where things get dicey. Five shots and only two stayed in the grid. Again questioning the club speed here; there’s no way those five shots averaged out to 1.49 SF.

I really feel like the session didn’t reveal anything I didn’t already know, though for some weird reason I hit my 8i better than my 7i on that particular day. Could have just been a fluke. The big draws wouldn’t even be so bad if I didn’t hit blocks, too. That’s something I’ve had an issue with for many years. I could probably shave five strokes off my handicap if I simply eliminated the blocks and was free to aim right without worrying about also missing right.

New irons are in. Going to hit the TM this week and compare the data.

Still waiting on my driver which I ordered months ago from a different place. Somebody screwed something up and I’m starting to get annoyed.

I was tired from work so I didn't go to the TM, but I did compare 6Is on my Mevo (incidentally it was good that I didn't spend the money going to TM because I was fatigued after about 25 shots).

I discarded anything that wasn't hit solidly - fat or thinned shots - and put it all together on a spreadsheet. Over ten shots with each club (I alternated sessions of five data points each), the JPX919F averaged 6.2 yards longer carry, 1.1° higher launch, and 3 yards more height than the MP4, though 400 rpm less spin which is contrary to my fitting session.

The range of my carry yardage went from 30.1 yards with the MP4 to 21 yards with the JPX919F. I saw a similar result with the ball speed range, 17.1 mph with the MP4 to 9.8 mph with the JPX919F. Both of these indicate that I am a lot more consistent with the JPX919F than the MP4.

I'm curious to see the lateral dispersion on the TM, but this preliminary test shows that I made a good decision.

And just FYI, both clubs have the same lie, length, and shaft. The stock loft of the JPX919F 6i is 28° and my MP4 6i is 1° stronger than stock at 29° (measured and bent myself). They're pretty close in terms of standard measurements. Hmm... I hit the stronger lofted club higher... how is that possible? 😜

Got it sorted out, my driver will ship from Ping on the 27th. Going to wait for that to come in before I hit TM.

Thinking about getting fit for a new 3w now.

Who is TM and why do you want to hit him?

He wronged me. Told me I’m not good at golf. Tried to show me “data” as “proof” of these claims.
