I think it will, sometime in the near future. It seems more and more golfers are having a run at 59. Several this past year had a shot at it with Furyk succeeding. Al Geiberger said there was no room for a bogey if you're going to shoot 59, but Furyk proved that wrong. So if he had parred that hole his would have been 58. I think it's coming.

It already has.  There have been several 58s shot on professional golf tours.   Jason Bohn did it on the Canadian Tour and Ryo Ishikawa on the Japanese Tour.   Shigeki Maruyama shot one in a US Open qualifier.

I was talking more in terms of PGA tour events, but I still wasn't aware of those.

The way they set up PGA tour events make this much more difficult, but I'm sure that one day the moon and planets will align, one good break will happen, and one clutch putt will fall a players way and we'll all be treated to a 58.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

I just did it last weekend. Of course, I was on the 12th hole at the time.

Yeah, 58 will happen eventually. Could be next year or not for the next 20, but it'll happen.

Last year I came across an online news story about junior golfers in the USA. Some of the 12-year-olds thought that a "really good round of golf" would be a 54: 18-under and averaging a birdie on every hole.

These kids are planning to blow right past 58, it seems.

Tough to argue with that........54 would be a really good round! ;-)

You would think if guys can shoot 59, 58 is a reasonable possibility.  Courses are tough though, even the "easy" ones.  Courses are long and they tuck those pins close to the edges of the greens.

I read years ago that North Korean dictator King Jong-Il, who was an avid golfer, typically claimed he broke 60 and was often said to shoot in the low 50's for a full-length 18-hole round.  I guess there's something about the possibility of facing a firing squad that made Kim's playing partners more generous with gimmees, by up to 100 yards or more, than the guys with whom I typically play.  Kim to caddy:  "102 meters, is it pitching wedge....?"    Caddy:  "Glorious Leader - it's good!  Pick it up, oh great Supreme Commander."

NO. Not communism but unbridled power. I have heard that illustrious leader Bill Clinton took many mulligans and his score improved too.
