Hello everybody,

As a high handicapper I know I can save many strokes if I could get up-and-down more from around the green. The contact I make on chip/short pitch shots is just not consistent enough.

Lots of Youtube instruction now says to play the ball from around the middle or even forward in your stance, not lean the club forward much, and use the bounce. They say that playing the ball back in the stance, leaning the shaft forward, is risky because it is so easy for the leading edge to dig into the ground.

Yet when I watch TV golf the pros all seem to still play the ball WAY back in their stance from around the green. Why do they do it that way? Are they not trying to eliminate risk?

Another school of thought says that the FURTHER back you play the ball, the LESS likely you are to catch it fat. So who is correct?

I have tried both methods, but now feel I should pick one and really practise it. Which would be the easiest for me, bearing in mind that I don’t have pro standard hand-eye co-ordination, and that I don’t play on the manicured courses the pros play on?

I personally play it off the front foot if I'm activating the bounce or playing off the bounce If I decide to go with leading edge/scoreline I prefer to play it off the back foot. Trying to play the leading edge of the front foot is disaster for me Leads to chili dip or full skull

9 put of 10 I'm hitting a soft pitch (thanks to Iacas) using the bounce. I play it off the front foot with a fairly narrow stance or if I want to take a bigger swing I'll play a slightly wider stance and move it closer to the middle but still forward. I'll only move it back of centre if I really want to keep it low which also usually means I'm chipping at that point. I also love hitting big flops. I'm probably doing it wrong but I play those off the front foot with a really open stance (think 45* open) and lead with my knees. Seems to work really well even though it seems unorthodox. Total lie percentage shot but I've done really well with them towards the end of this season.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

For me, it largely depends on the lie and the distance. If I'm just off the green and the lie is decent, then ball is in the back of my stance and I'll go with a little bump and run. Most other situations the ball is more forward, club face and stance slightly open. Other factors come into play as well certainly but those are my personal rules of thumb. Where I struggle is playing those chips/pitches where you have a downhill lie, I am guaranteed to shank them and have yet to figure out how I should be set up.

Bold Part, is false. What putting it further back does is make contact a premium. Basically you have to brush the ground or your going to duff the chip, or thin it because you don't want to duff it.

Well if you learn the proper pitching motion (check out the video's on this forum), you will find yourself pitching a lot more than chipping. I still haven't really figured out when I really want to actually chip the ball.

I have, so far, found it easier to largely stick to one type of shot around the green and that is a pitch.  I believe the video saevel25 is referring (or one of them) is found here: http://thesandtrap.com/t/39411/quickie-pitching-video

Watch it a few times, read through that whole thread for discussion and to find yet more videos, then watch the original again pretty often along with this one: http://thesandtrap.com/t/54556/short-gametrajectories .  It works!  At least, it has made a big difference for me.  For what it's worth, I pretty much always use a 58 degree lob wedge with 12 degrees of bounce around the green.  For me, that seems to be the loft/bounce sweet spot, but others have good success with various clubs.

From all I've read, hitting the majority of greens in regulation isn't something one can expect until they are well down into the single digit handicap range.  The rest of us need a reliable scrambling shot, and (IMO) we need to practice it regularly.

Try this from Jim Furyk.   Too often, for me at least, when any question in my mind about the short game arises, like 'which club, which ball position, where to land the ball, backspin or not...etc, the shot is generally shitty. KISS..Keep It Simple Stupid.  Until i can shoot 85 consistently i will be better off with the KISS program. And i have found that the further back the ball in the stance, the more spinny once hitting the green; sometimes good, not always.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
