I've been Playing Golf for: ~5 years. During the first 3 years, I never really practiced golf. Just messing around with friends when going to the weekly practice sessions the club arranged for juniors.

My current handicap index or average score is: 89 (12 rounds)

My typical ball flight is: Baby draw/fade

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Scooping just before impact, result being a high push-fade or high straight shot that ends up 10-15 yards shorter than usual, which is horrible when hitting approach shots. Doesn't happen too often but still a miss I'd like to eliminate.

Take a look at these very different releases.

Really nice swing, I think your scores will come down soon just by you getting in more reps.  I see a couple of set-up pieces that can be cleaned up to help lessen the scooping.  I also think the shaft is a little steep when the left arm is parallel to the ground on the downswing.   Couple things I would suggest

- Turn the left foot out a few more degrees and feel like the knees are pointed out rather than pinched inward.  You can turn the right foot out as well.  Like this pic

Will help get your downswing look more like the right pic and would practice this feel (link).  More "pressure" into the ground with the left foot.

You can also have the hand slightly ahead at address and the spine tilted a little to the right, again like the pic above, will help lessen any "flip" you see and shallow the shaft out more on the downswing.

Thanks a lot! Very informative and I will definitely try to implement that into my swing.

After filming my swing I weakened my grip quite alot trying to do the "Hogan roll". I also try to have a shallower delivery to the ball and be more Hogan-like at impact. When I catched it right, I trapped the ball like crazy and I love the ballflight. I feel like that's the way to hit it. Luckily winter in Sweden is quite long which means I've got almost 5 months to grind and get comfortable.

Again, thanks for the tips!

Very very nice swing,,,can't agree more than your "hogan roll" comment. That is a great way to smack that ball. Your doing great, can't believe you guys have snow already

Like working on the swing,,score means nothing to me. Might just go to the range and give up playing... ( might happen)

Actually, the snow only stayed a week or so. Hopefully I can go to the driving range and do some work tomorrow

My only advice on the "hogan roll".. U really need a super super weak grip.. The "my swing evolution" on you tube has some great great videos on this roll how to do it and when. When I first started with this, I was hooking it off the planet and a few shanks. A very "timing" and patience, everyone that I chat with that is successful with this type of golf method..is really benefiting from it. Takes a lot of repetition..oops, and one more thing..it also helps to start with something they use to call "the caddy roll" or "lagging club head takeaway".. Keep at it Chris

Christo has really inspired me to take my ballstriking to the next level. I've been following him for almost 2 years now and seeing how much he improved makes me wanna try it out as well.

When I first tried it out, there were a lot of shanks and hooks. But I've had a couple of weeks practicing on my backyard, where I can hit ~50 yards shots, just to get the feel for it. Nowhere near mastered but I love grinding.

Thank you for the support Chris.

  • 1 month later...

UPDATE: Recorded November 30 .

Using a much weaker grip and my ballstriking has never been better.
Noticed on some of the shots that my shoulders were open. It's an old habit that I often forget about.

Swing looks good.  You may want to try moving the ball a bit more forward in your stance.  With the 7 iron, it actually looks back of center a bit.

Very nice swing and I was only wondering why you haven't incorporated any if the changes advices my Mike above? I think these changes will go a long way to helping you get even lower!

Actually I forgot about it. Will definitely incorporate it.

Been working on shallowing out my angle of attack on all my clubs. Have gotten rid of the flipping action aswell.

Scoring between 75-80 this past week.

Swing looks fairly powerful as well.  How far are you hitting it?

Swing looks fairly powerful as well.  How far are you hitting it?

Driver: 250-280 metres (~270-305 yards)
7 iron: 145 metres (~160 yards)
Pitching wedge: 115 metres (~125 yards)

And yeah, I also noticed my ball position being a bit far back. Will be playing it more forward from now on.

    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
