I'm playing a championship course in Spain over the new year that has 6 x par 3's, 6 x par 4's & 6 x par 5's! I've known a course layout like this before! Has anyone else? Also playing one with floodlights and is open till 10pm, again this is new to me! Anyone else seen anything unusual?

Here is my selection, nothing like a guy worth $100M getting pissed at some perceived slight at a country club and deciding to make his own golf course (which is the story he told in his book). Open since 1993, it was just announced that it is going on the market:

Bill Meadows is actually a classic great American success story and from all accounts a stand up guy. And the course has been going for 20 years, so it's not a flash in the pan, but I still think the baseball hole is really weird.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

I play night golf fairly often, probably around 20% of my rounds. It's a great option if you have kids because you can go play golf after they go to bed instead of sitting in front of the boob tube all night. Word of advice: bring a small flash light because there will be areas that the flood lights don't cover so well, especially off the beaten path ;-) which brings me to my second piece of advice for night golf, short is better than long. If you need a few extra strokes over the round to make up for playing conservative it will be much less punishing than taking penalties for balls you can't find in the dark. This is especially true on approach shots because over the green is death as there's generally no light at all back there!

Some architects have fun with bunkers.  Desmond Muirhead had some pretty fanciful layouts with bunkers shaped like fish, etc...  A course in northern Michigan built by the founders of Honey Baked Ham have a bunker shaped like a pig.  A local course has a green complex shaped like our mitten of a state complete with a foot bridge modeled on the Mackinac Bridge.

Brudenell River Golf Course - Prince Edward Island, Canada also has 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's ad 6 par 5's.  Played there about 10-12 years ago.  Very nice course at the time, and it looks like it still is.

I'm from PEI and, at the risk of sounding like a homer, PEI has some beautiful world class courses.

Oysters in the bar and grill? That would be rockin'.

Plus blue mussels and lobster.

Plus blue mussels and lobster.

Considering hot dogs are the norm I'd say that's unusual. Though my course is pretty fancy with their cheese filled pigs in a blanket, the little ramekin of Dijon mustard is a nice touch.

Anyway the most unusual course here is all about what else they offer. The have live entertainment, dining events, wedding golf packages, just about anything you can think of. Just got the email for breakfast with Santa. There's a few around here that are competing for every entertainment dollar you have.

Brudenell is one of my favorite courses on the island. Nice to have Dundarave next door as well.

I was with the family at the time, so Brudenell was the only course I got to play. But definitely will be going back.

Yeah that family owns 4 courses I believe. In addition to the above there's also Mill River and another one I can recall the name of.

I'd say that the Berkshire Red Course in England is the best and most famous course that has 6-6-6 layout http://www.theberkshire.co.uk/courses/red_course/

It is likely Crowbush. The four (Mill River, Brudenell, Dundarave, and Crowbush) are run by the same company.

Lake Chabot GC in Oakland CA  (http://www.lakechabotgolf.com/)

Has a Par 6 18th.

Has a blind Par 3 9th hole that must be over 100yds straight down - you can't see the green from the blue tees (but you can see across the Bay).

(Used to have a periscope on the 14th to check if the fairway was clear - sadly, that's gone now.)

...I LOVE that course....  Play it about five times a year.

(Plus, it's super hilly, which I don't get at all in Oklahoma.)
