She is a great player and she hates losing. While I like her competitive edge, she comes across as a sore loser every time she does not win and even when she does. When she won player of the year and attained the #1 ranking, her comments were more about Michelle Wie getting more attention than herself. She had the twitter flap earlier in the year regarding the fans in China. And on Sunday after losing to Lexi, she gave Lexi a brief hug and walked off the green. Is it a big deal? No. Do these small things add up? Yes.

It has to be frustrating to be the #1 player and not feel you're getting the respect and accolades associated with it.  I remember when Luke Donald was #1, the press and fans never saw him as anything more than a placeholder for Tiger or Rory, though he seemed to handle it better.

As for her criticism of the fans in China, it came off as sour grapes because of how she lost, but the officials didn't control the fans in China and it had to be difficult for all the golfers who aren't used to cameras going off while they are in the middle of their swing.

She definitely has a bit of a chip on her shoulder, but she had to overcome scoliosis just to get to this level so maybe she feels she's worked harder to get to the top and isn't getting the recognition she deserves.

I don't think I've ever seen anything bad about her. I like her as a golfer quite a bit.

I think she is a tremendous player.  Not sure why you see it this way.  I have watched a lot of LPGA golf and don't get your impression at all.

Im a big fan of Stacy, mostly because shes a Mizuno staffer.  Shes overcome a lot in her life but at times she does come across as a sore loser.  She hates to lose and seems to wear her heart on her sleeve, which could come across as her being a sore loser.

Im actually OK with it.  Id rathar her do that than to come in 2nd and be all fake by saying how happy she is for the person who beat her.

Yeah, same here.  I, admittedly, don't watch a lot of LPGA golf, but I've seen some and don't get that impression at all.  I'm not sure how much you can read into one "brief hug."  Isn't that what they always do?  They have to hug their caddy, the other players, and the other players caddies ... thats a lot of hugs to go through on the green.  And even if there was something to that hug, what does it mean?  Maybe those two aren't close friends.  Maybe Lexi said something mean and hurt her feelings.  Maybe she thought Lexi was sick and she didn't want to get her germs.  Who knows?

I need more than this. ;)

I can't see reading anything into the brief hug. I've seen plenty of very brief handshakes on the PGA Tour after a loss (and I don't have any problem with that either).

I missed the "brief hug" part.

You could take it the other way, too, @Tailgater - she wanted to get off Lexi's stage as quickly as possible. If she stuck around, she could be accused of hogging the spotlight.

Why do they have to hug anyway, just because they're girls? Totally ridiculous, they're co-workers (or colleagues) not BFFs from band camp. They should just shakes hands or make-out.

Is there a hug guideline I can check out? Like that pamphlet the USGA made up for the anchoring rule.

Well my post did leave room for making out as an alternative.

Maybe they should make hugging the custom for PGA too. It would awesome when Tiger's in a grouping with Sergio or Poulter! Jiminez would probably need some close watching though, he looks like a humper!

I advise you not to watch women's volleyball or you'll get more uptight than a fundamentalist cleric waking up in the middle of a San Francisco drag queen show. The teams hug, high-five, and slap butts after EVERY point, win or lose. I really don't understand that - it doesn't seem like a whole team can be that impacted from point to point by their mental games like players can be in tennis.

No, they should make them do that Miss Universe "I hate you, I mean congratulations" fake-kiss-on-both-cheeks thing.

I think if you interview anybody who's disappointed with how they played you'll get a similar reaction; it's just that some people are better at hiding it than others and I feel no differently whether they pretend it means nothing and smile or they're visibly upset with themselves.

    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
