Winter Depression Thread

Played a quick 9 holes today in Chicago. 42 degrees and light breeze - fantastic for December! Used my hickories and shot a 43 (2 pars and 7 bogeys). Sadly forecast for next 10 days - rain, snow and highs in 30's so not looking good for another 2018 round.

Time now to hit Ebay for the magic club to fix my game  along with re-reading my various golf books to find the hidden secret to the perfect swing. Another typical "hope over experience" winter in Chicago!

I thought I'd post here since we got down to 61 today. A bit chilly. But I'm fighting through it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you suck. :-P

Some courses are still open. I have some time off after Christmas and will try to get out. No snow in the forecast yet.

It's been 50s and sunny all week here. I almost took today off to play golf, but I'm going to play tomorrow. It might be a little windy, but it's supposed to be over 60.

We had a bad November for golf, but since Veteran's Day, it's been good golf weather. Been able to play a couple of times and get to the range a couple of times, too. We'll probably have a shitty March and/or April to pay for this, though. That's when I really start hanging out in this thread...

Got nine holes in. I think I had a birdie and two bogeys, if I was trying? The greens still felt like ice. The first hop would SHOOT the ball forward. I putted with my wedge a few times. Hit 6" behind the ball twice. 😄 But got up and down both times. Reached a par five in two, nearly. Five of my six drivers were great.

In Chicago also and yes, a string of really nice days there.... too bad I had to work.  I remarked several times to co-workers, who don't even golf, how nice of a gold day it was. Trying that mistwood owned dome in bolingbrook this weekend.  Have you been there?  May cure the golf depression as temps drop around here.  Check it over out below if you haven't.

Later in her life, I think my Mom was affected by SAD. She absolutely hated the short days and lack of light in the Winter. I called her about every other day, but made a point of it to call her on the Solstice. I'd say, "Mom! i have good news!" "What?!" Then I'd tell her that, starting tomorrow, and continuing for 6 solid months, every day would get a little bit longer!

Yeah, yeah, rub it in! Our local golf dome collapsed last Winter under a layer of frozen rain and heavy, wet snow! The owner took the insurance money, cleaned up the site, but never rebuilt. I don't know if there was enough money left to rebuild, but now we have no place to practice when it's cold and snowy.

I played the the old course at St. Andrews today on the simulator.   It was fun and sure beat watching the listless Wolverines vs. Florida.

yesterday it was warm enough to golf (54º) but I had too much on my plate.    Today the high was around 28º

From the land of perpetual cloudiness.   I'm Denny

That was deplorable. When it comes to non-conference play, I bite the bullet and root for TTUN. Not what the B10 wanted to see.

As for golf, it was 35 degrees but not windy. I got my last round of 2018 at Miami Shores here in Troy and was the only person on the course. Muddy as hell. Scrapped a heap of mud off my pull cart afterward. Not displeased with the 89 I shot given the circumstances.

Well we got our heavy snowfall that we get every 7-8 years and the courses are all closed. Not to mention it's been cold as hell here for the last 5 days. Even more depressing is there is more shitty weather in the forecast. Last time we had this was in 2005 and we went a whole month without playing. I guess I shouldn't complain, we had perfect weather all winter last year.

So it'll be warm tomorrow in the NE generally, probably wet, given it's New Year's Day, wondering if courses will be open.

Snow and cold are not the problem down here. Rain has been the problem. Below are the results of 2 raight days of rain. Not heavy downpours, just 2 days of steady rain lasting all day. It will take at least a week of sunshine and wind to dry out my course into playable condition.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
