Winter Depression Thread

I think it's funny reading posts from Florida golfers boo-hoo'ing about 60 degree temps.   In these parts, people start wearing shorts when it's 60 degrees.  LOL

45°!!! But next week the lows are 13, 12, and 14 on three consecutive days.

The forecast is usually off. It is often 5-10° colder at night than the forecast.

47* tomorrow, but snow for Thursday.  Seems we just can't get rid of winter here.

I'd be happy to trade with you...
I'll give you a -21 Celsius (-5.8 Fahrenheit) which fells like -28 Celsius ( -18.4 Fahrenheit) for your 47 Fahrenheit (9 Celsius) any day of the week and twice on Sundays at this time of the year!

In my bag:

Kind of feel bad about the snow melting now with everything flooding. :( Fortunately my house is on a hill, lots of others not so lucky though.

I do not think these other guys can comprehend what 60 degrees and wind feels like here. Today was pretty brutal when the sun was not out and beautiful when it was.

I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you. The wind howling at 15mph while the temperature was single digits this week makes it a bit difficult.

I played 18 in about 2.5 hours late yesterday afternoon.  It was in the mid 40s but reached 60 the day before, which melted almost all the snow.  Lumpiest greens I've ever seen, but it was good to get out there.

I'm off to Florida for 4 days of golf tomorrow!  It is supposed to snow while I am away.  Luckily, for me, my son is back on spring break, so he gets to shovel for me!!!

Finally able to start Golf Season 2014 in Southern PA this afternoon!!!! For me, that means at least two good weeks of short game work, followed by at least 3-4 sessions on the range before I even think about stepping up to a TeeBox. Otherwise, my Winter Depression would turn into Poor Play Depression very quickly.

Yeah we're getting teased today too. Supposed to get into the 60's this afternoon but they say snow tomorrow. Got to 73 yesterday but I still wasn't ready to get the summer clothes out. Though it was the first day I didn't wear a mock neck outside in long time. Surprisingly the courses were relatively slow not many people out enjoying the warm temps. There were aeration plugs on the course I played so getting closer every day.

Aside from Wednesday and Thursday this week, we're supposed to be at least in the mid 40's here in Indiana. I can play in that, but all the courses I've talked to said they are looking to open April 1st. Apparently, ground is frosted down to about 48" deep. That frost needs to thaw out or else the courses would take a beating. It'll be frustrating as heck to have days in the 50's and STILL not be able to golf yet!

51° here by Cleveland... and 5-8" of snow on the way on Wednesday.. (same boat as you Erik...)

I can't take it anymore. We have gone from 50° and sunny to 20° and blizzard conditions in the span of 18 hours like twice in the past week or so. This better be the last blast of Winter because I am absolutely dying to get on the course. It's looking like another late/short season for us here since most courses are anticipating golf being impossible until the mid/late April.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
