You choose the other cup, because its still 3 cups, so its now 2/3 chance. If you keep the original its 1/3 because you didn't change anything.

Yeah, but to elaborate on this explanation a little more ... because it's what finally made me understand.  Look at it slightly differently:

Let's say he offers you the chance to switch from the ONE cup you chose to BOTH of the other cups prior to him flipping over anything, then he'll flip over one of them that doesn't contain the diamond after you switch.  You wouldn't hesitate, right?  You would know that your chances would go immediately from 33% to 67%.  Well, that is exactly what he did, he just flipped it first.

So how then do we solve the problem of the clingy girlfriend? That was the next one right?!

Is that you Rory?

Just trying to lighten things up in a humanistic kind of way. I apologize. Thought Id throw some commonality in for fun sake. Cannot find my riddle book anyway. I shall retire and return no more. You have prevailed with a rather over starched collar. I concede.

Yeah, but to elaborate on this explanation a little more ... because it's what finally made me understand.

People are belligerent about this one too.  I use this example.......

Let's say you have TEN cups and a diamond under one.

Pick the one you think has the diamond.

NOW....Monte removes EIGHT of the other cups and shows you there is no diamond under them.

Do you switch to the remaining cup?  Or stick with the cup you chose back when it was a 10% chance of winning?

I have a glass (simple glass, perfect right cylinder).

I 'looks' half full.

How can I confirm it really is half full?   (I have nothing other than the glass, the water in it, and me.)

A couple of trivia questions:

What was the size of the golf cup/hole in the very first British Open?

Where did participants tee off from in the very first British Open?

Those aren't puzzles or riddles. This isn't a trivia thread.
