Is there a quick way to calculate my handicap? Doesn't have to be 100% accurate, just a ballpark? Something that doesn't involve saving scorecards, analytics, calculating slope, and all the other bs. Just simple equation? Currently I'm a par-bogey golfer, not sure the number.

Or, just give your local state golf association $20 or so and get an official handicap for the year.  No calculations needed.....in fact, if it's GHIN based (and the vast majority are) you can simply enter your scores on-line and be done with it.

What's the point of "knowing the number", if the number isn't accurate, or recognized by anyone?  You're a pretty avid golfer or you wouldn't have come to this site, or care in the first place.  Do it right, and be done with it!

I'm genuinely curious.....why not a "real" handicap?  Is it the $25?

Other perks come with belonging to ghin and whatever your state association is. I get special offers and invites to tournaments. We had access to tickets for the 2014 BMW before they were offered to the public. Though I am not impressed with the functionality you can also keep stats on ghin. But only because I've used better.

Not a "real handicap" because I just want to golf. It's my vacation each time and I don't want to have to figure out the algorithms involved factoring course slope and review of past scorecards. I'm a par to boogie golfer, that's all. Not sure what the $25 your referring to is?

The $25 is for a GHIN, but you might also need to pay another $60 $120 to join a club. Or much more for private clubs. Just for fun, then you don't need to pay for an official handicap. You might be restricted from some tournaments.

Just joined the Carolinas eClub for my county today!  http://www.carolinasgolf.org/join-eclub

Should have my login sent to me by this Monday so I can finally get my "official" handicap ;) The 22 I have here is just a guesstimate but with how I have been playing lately im assuming I will be closer to 19-20, but wont know for sure until after more rounds in Jan-Feb.

@ Lihu - just curious - if I paid the $35 to join a Carolina eClub, which they clarified get's me an official GHIN, its not necessary to join an actual course / club for handicap purposes, correct? Im just confused by the idea that I already paid to join the eclub to get a GHIN but "might also need to pay another $60-$120 to join a club" ? Thanks!

It's just that a lot of people join a local club to get the GHIN.

You're absolutely right. There's no requirement at all to join a physical club in order to obtain an official GHIN handicap.

For the "club" I joined, I think I read that the first year was $35 and every subsequent year was only $10. If true, good deal, IMO.

Another handicap ? Since I am not a member of a physical club, should I be recording all my scores as "away"? It gives the option for Home, Away, Tournament.

I just entered my first score and put "home" (since its what I consider my home course, although im not actually a member). Was this the wrong thing to do? And if so, is it very important to rectify it?

Thank You

You're fine entering those as your "home" course.  The only designation that matters are the Tournament scores.

    • No, they will collect the "Stay & Play" cost at the Virtues on Sunday. I was a little surprised by that, I would collect on Saturday, but I guess the person doing the reservations & bills is located at the Virtues.  I think we can trust that none of us are going to run out on the bill and leave us in a lurch.
    • Thanks for following up. Since you're going to be booking the stay and play packages, does that mean you have to put up the money up front?
    • They're playing 16 games in each match though. Don't need much of an advantage before that number of players significantly loads things in their favor. The other team has to win 8.5 games to beat them. At a 65/35 split, that's a lot and pretty unlikely (about 10% of the time).
    • Why does the second sentence have to be true? If they're used to playing a tough course that's improperly rated, they're going to both have inflated indexes and have higher skills relative to them. If their home course features a variety of different challenges, I don't see why their game wouldn't travel well. And on the flip side, some courses and their members take pride in how hard their course is and how tough it's rated, and that bit of vanity ends up hurting them in these kinds of competitions.
    • I discussed it today but can call back and re-confirm.  I would love to be wrong on that point. Note: That may have been before they changed the hotel due to lack of room at Hampton Inn. Update on Friday Hotel: If I can give a count to EagleSticks they can get us a discount on Friday night at the hotel.  I do not have the $$ but should be much lower than the $249 the hotel quoted me. I do not have my list with me for the Friday hotels but if you want one, please post ASAP and I will get the rate and get them held. Thanks @billchao for catching this.
