We can't possibly know if he's able to hit a draw if he never attempts one.  He's a smart guy, so I assume he has his reasons.

Yeah but likewise if he can't hit a draw at the moment he'll never attempt one. lol

At the end of the day whether he can/can't or whether it's a choice will never be known until he does hit/attempt one.

I do find it hard to believe that he's unable to to though; more likely is as golfingdad said he's choosing not to whether through course management, injury he doesn't want to aggravate or something else.

I saw him hit draws last year with his 3 and 5 woods at Doral, so I know he can do it.  Yes, you are right in the wording.  For whatever reason he is choosing to elect to not hit draws.  The commentators of the tourney were mentioning it on TV pretty much on every drawable hole, noting that he only hits fades.  That's where my wording originated from.  It's a good question, but only one that he and Sean Foley can really answer

I agree with you. Not a doubt in my mind he can hit a draw anytime he wants to. Hell, he's Tiger Woods!

I don't even have any problem at all with predominately playing fades on "draw holes" if that's what he is doing best.

Where it crosses over to a head scratcher to me is when he's trying to play a 30 yard slice for no apparent reason whatsoever.

I suppose that the camera angles could be off, and I could be wrong.  It certainly looked like he was aiming precisely where he was hitting it, but it's entirely possible that he was aiming down the left side and then hitting straight pulls.

I would also point out that his demeanor fascinated me.  He was hitting drives that ended up 30-40 left of the fairway beyond the rough, beyond the trees, and into the waste area, and he was reacting just like you do when you hit it good.  Reach down, pick up the tee, hand the driver to the caddie and start walking.  No grimaces, no gritted teeth, no vieled curses, just "ho-hum, as I expected."  Almost like he hit it where he intended, or he just wasn't at all surprised by the results.

@Golfingdad The announcers agreed with you, and they were there -- he was lining up everything left.

He was very Zen-Like with his miscues. It's almost as if he's saying, "It is what it is, go to the next shot."

I was waiting for Bad Tiger to appear... as in "Eff you, Tiger" or his old reliable "GD!"

__

As to the above, Tiger ought to be able to hit a cut because he's freakin' Tiger Woods ... but he tried and failed. The same with draws, he can hit them when he's not swatting at the ball like a bipolar psychotic.

Somethin's up ... Foley is in his head or something ... because this has gone on for too long and it's too weird ... the inability to hit routine shots ... disappearing on the weekends...

Weird ...

Yeah, like @MiniBlueDragon said, its certainly possible he's not comfortable playing draws right now and that is why he's not attempting them.  But it could also be that he's really trying to perfect the swing he's after ... which could presumably be one that he hits dependable cuts with 99% of the time.

Only he and Foley know this I guess.

It's funny how most everyone looks good in sunglasses, but Tigs just looks like a doofus...

LOL ... and I think that carries over to the facial hair too.  I prefer my Tigers clean shaven. ;)

I agree,   with that much control....why not just hit it straight and forget the fade?

Lee Trevino once said, If you have a straight a way fairway or a clean unobstructed view of the hole, that is not the time to hit a circus shot.....

I don't know about your spitfisher but straight is much harder to me than some shape. I can hit a cut and a draw once and a while but straight is not a shot I even bother with.  For me if I try to hit the ball straight I feel like there is way more room to be wrong than when I shape a shot. If I go for a cut and it doesn't cut well Im usually ok. If I setup for a cut  over fade a shot and still be ok but a missed straight shot can be wrong a bunch of different ways. Just my opinion.

Just finished watch day 2 with Tiger, Rory, and Gallacher.  Oh, how the mighty have fallen.  From what i saw today i wonder if Tiger will ever win another tourney, let alone a Major. His play around the green, esp the putting, very poor.  Very poor compared to his youthful years.  His body language said 'tired, worn out and only marginally interested in the competition'.  And yes, many drives shot straight out to the left. I hope he makes the cut.

He's at -3, he'll make the cut. And he won 5 times last year, I'm sure it's not all left him.

Tigs must have butchered the course -- I saw 16-18 and that was un-inspired golf.

A five wood from 215 on 18 landed him about 20 yards beyond and into that bunker. Next shot was poor, 2 putts from about 20 feet.

Why not set himself up with a short wedge from the fairway over that flag cut close to the edge near the water...

I'm thinking this: 'They paid me $3m to show. I better make the freakin cut, so I'll be over the water in 2, and if I can't get it down in three more, Foley is done."

Good to see Rory at the top of the leadeboard. I was hoping that he and Tiger would battle it out on Sunday but that's highly unlikely now.

You said the same crap before and he's won several times since then. Until Tiger's retired, you could take every "he'll never win again" bet ever offered to you and you'd come out ahead in the end.

Tiger playing like crap so far this season

I think this is his 3rd tournament and so far he's played poorly in one and were it not for Zach Johnson's miracle holeout from 80 yards he would have won the other.

He basically should be 50% on wins this year ... so, yeah, I agree ... crap.

Agreed, total crap. You can't win 'em all if you lose the first one, true stat.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
