I have a friend that always carries a 2i in the bag. He barely uses it and I find it impossible to hit well at the moment (maybe one day). I'd much prefer to hit a hybrid or wood.

It all depends on the course for me. Links golf - yes the 2-iron  is a great option from tight lies and the tee. Inland courses where you may need to go over trees or from lush fairways, then a fairway or hybrid works best.

I don't because I've never owned one but I go through spells where I hit long irons exceptionally well and during those spells I would use one if I had one (and even a 1 iron).

Same for me.  I practice with my 3i a lot cause I find if I can hit that well I can hit 5i-driver well but that wood/driver practice and 5i practice don't translate across that whole range as well.  So I'll have stretches where I'm playing really well with my long irons (relative to my HC of course) and fantasize about having a 2i in the bag to make it easier to play almost an entire round never hitting a hybrid, wood, or driver for when the irons are working but the long sticks aren't as well.  When I get the funds for a new set my plan is to get 2i-PW so at least I have the option of gaming the 2i when the long irons are working.

Another question that I'm sure's been asked before.  Anyone have any idea of the percentages of pros that game 2i, hybrid, or 5w for the club in between 3i and 3w?

I still have an old Dynacraft Innerdyne blade 2 iron. I use it for an alignment stick. :-P

Yup. Currently (it's wet) I have a 5-wood in the bag just now but I carry a 2-iron (see signature; use it maybe half a dozen times per round) maybe for 2/3 of the year. Don't have a problem hitting it really as grew up with long irons. Long, straight and workable. I don't like most of the hybrids I've ever tried either.

Different folks, different strokes and all that.

Yes, and a one iron as well.   As Tom Wishon has pointed out in  his superb book "The New Search For The Perfect Golf Club", iron lofts have been reduced over the years, so that a three iron today has almost the same loft as a one iron of the 1960s to 70s, in an effort to sell more clubs to the gullible on the supposition that the particular manufacturer's irons are longer than those of  others !!

There are none as gullible as golfers!!!!

I see you play at Wollaton Park GC----it is really superb, but I haven't played there in years (early 1960s!)----do you still have the deer herd?

Oh yes. We still have the deer here. Nice to watch but a pain in the backside when they've been trotting through the bunkers or across the greens! You should pay us another visit as the course has been in great shape the last few years and the greens have been some of the best in area outside of places like Sherwood Forest.

My uncle hits a 2 iron. Of course, he's also VERY good, drives it a mile, and has a fast swing speed which allows him to do so. Me? I can't even hit a 4 iron well ;)

I believed for a long time that I simply could not play a 3 or 4 iron, that I needed to play hybrids. This past year I tried a 3 iron for the first time in years and actually hit it really well consistently. I'm tempted to try out a 2i for the hell of it.

I'm using the Ping Rapture 2 Driving iron - love it. I'm actually getting better numbers with it than my hybrid. Less spin and lower projection which I like. Will see how it plays out of tough lies tho..

  • 1 month later...

I am coming late to this party, but I wanted to comment on 2 irons.  I am returned to golf after a long hiatus.  Back in the day, I used a two iron regularly off the tee on short par fours.  I also played taylor raylors from the fairway and rough - which I loved.

Since returning to golf I have purchased multiple new hybrids(cobra, taylor made and cleveland).   Off  the fairway and in the rough - I think they are superior to irons in many cases.

However, this past weekend I pulled my old ping two iron out on Saturday and Sunday and hit it off the tee multiple times on short par fours (330, 350, 370).  I hit a draw and it produced a low shot that hit the ground and rolled forever.    On two narrow holes, it went  270+ yards.  It felt GREAT and was much more predicable than my hybrids (and driver) off the tee - since it never got very high.  I am going retro now.  I won't hit it off the fairway, but it was just as good as ever off the tee.

I'm 57. I hit my cobra encore driver about 250. I don't carry a 3 wood. The two iron went 220 in the air and then just kept running. So, it went about as far as a good drive. I may upgrade to a Ping Zing two iron.

Would I wear those jeans to hit that far? Na But on another note this guy just bombs those things, although I still think he should check out the posture thread.

2-iron? Why? No offense, but why play outdated technology? They have designed hybrids and fairways utility clubs that severely dwarf the performance of a 2-iron. They even have hybrids that can be adjusted for a lower penetrating trajectory.. Absolutely no need to a 2-iron, many would argue, no need for a 3-iron any longer..

    • I have a putting mat in my office. It's 9 feet long almost 4 feet wide. I've drawn a line down it in order to practice hitting my line and stuff. Works fine for what it is.  While I'm not a fan of lining up a line on my golfball for every putt. I think for practice sessions it can have a lot of value.  To me this product makes sense. This is the first time I've seen it. It showed up as an add on the right side of the TST webpage. What do you all think? PuttAIM Laser Training Aid Get ready to dominate the greens like never before. PuttAIM Golf is a golf putting aid that uses laser technology to help you improve your game. This device works to ensure your putts are aligned properly and on track...
    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
