The Eisenhower Tree was positioned to the left of the 17th fairway, approximately 210 yards from the Masters tee.

Billy Payne, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, confirmed today that the recent ice storm caused irreparable damage to the Eisenhower Tree, resulting in the loss of most major branches. Accordingly, the tree was removed this weekend.

On Sunday, Payne offered the following statement:

“Like so many of our family, friends and neighbors in this community, Augusta National Golf Club has been busy cleaning up after the historic ice storm this week. Everyone affected remains in our hearts and prayers, and we likewise hope for a speedy and complete recovery for all.

“The loss of the Eisenhower Tree is difficult news to accept. We obtained opinions from the best arborists available and, unfortunately, were advised that no recovery was possible.

“We have begun deliberations of the best way to address the future of the 17th hole and to pay tribute to this iconic symbol of our history – rest assured, we will do both appropriately.

“I can report that the golf course sustained no major damage otherwise. We are now open for Member play and we will be unaffected in our preparations for the 2014 Masters Tournament.”

    • Very fair, I can also have a tendency to think that way, and it's struck me too that it's maybe a generational thing.    I don't necessarily think things will end up worse, and I also think LIV have some interesting ideas while the PGA were too old fashioned. All that said , I think getting there is going to involve several lost years for the sport, and I get the dismay some are expressing.
    • Day 1 (10 Dec 23) - Putting drills today (total rainout).  Missed posting yesterday so I get to start over again (actually wrote up the post, just failed to submit).  At this rate I’ll never get back to red numbers….😁
    • Day 15: 12/10/2023 Over speed training today. Oh my goodness, I was slow. Seemed the harder I tried the worse it got. ... Looking forward to being better on Tuesday.
    • Interesting.  I will say the Disney piece where they replicated a live game was not to my liking.  The helmets were so large relative to the bodies of the players it just looked corny.  Also not sure what the point of doing that would be, why replicate a game when I can simply watch the game? I do not watch a lot of NHL but recall a few years back they added a tracking line to the puck that I did not care fore.  Also, I really do not see the point of having a graphic circle at the feet of a running NFL Player.  I can see the player and do not need a graphic to tell me where he is.  My eyes do that all by themself. The trick is to offer graphics that enhance but do not interfere with the watching of the sporting event.
    • I like this show a lot for their reaction to VFX in movies. They just did a video on their reaction to video effects in live sports. This is also a history of VFX in sports. Going all the way back to the OG, displaying these score on the TV in real time.
