Since this is the 'social thread' this might apply. I have a best bud whose wife is a facebook junkie.  We met said couple and several other friends and acquaintances for dinner this past Saturday night.  The 'facebooking' begins with a picture of her first glass of wine, then a facebook post about the brand and how good it is.  It goes from there to butting other people out of the way to get pics of people arriving to the event and posts that to facebook.  During dinner she likes to walk around a snap pics of other plates on the table and post what Steve or Sue are eating. The several 'group shots,' ("Hey everybody ... SMILE!) taken are posted to her facebook page. She literally spends 3/4 of the time we're together with her phone and facebook postings. Her husband, (my best friend) sits at the other end of the table most times we're out with a group and ignores her behavior.  When the wife and I go to dinner with just them, she's a little better but still the same drill. The wait staff always has to take a group pic of the 4 of us so she can 'share.' AFTER dinner, she wants everybody to listen to who has responded as she runs down the facebook post responses from so and so. So after dinner, we ran across the street to a club where a band was playing.  This is a place where the average age of the crowd is pushing 50 or so.  Great classic rock band, (I know the guys) that focuses on playing 60s and 70s music.  A large group of 20-somethings were front and center at the club when we arrived.  Good kids, all having a good time, dancing to 60s music and being model citizens.  I actually met and talked with a couple of them while they stood at the bar ordering more Bud Light beers. The irony?  NONE of the 20-somethings were standing around playing with their phones, taking pictures, posting to facebook or anything else to do with technology.  They were just there having fun and enjoying the company of their large group of friends. Why would a 53-year-old woman be so freaking OBSESSED with an iPhone and facebook ... other than because she CAN? I hate social media.  It is the bane of society as we approach 2015. dave

She clearly cares more about what her virtual friends think than what the real-life friends/husband think.

Tell your best friend/her husband that you're not going out with her anymore if she can't keep her phone in her purse.

Easy solution.

If 2 years then there is a potential problem. In the Bay Area there are "detox" centers for people who have become obsessed with social media, chatting, technology related etc. I think it may even be classified clinically as an addiction. Like anything too much of a bad thing.

How long?  Pretty much since she's been able to.  iPhone plus Facebook = she's been doing it since acquiring the two ingredients.  My only consoling opinion is that she's here, the rest of her family (4 sisters and a brother) are located in other states.  She is the family 'glue,' if you know what I'm saying.  This is her way of keeping her family up to the minute on what she's doing.  I'm in the same situation with my family, but I'm sure they don't care what beer I happen to be eating with my burger.

Good idea and I'm THIS close to recommending it.  Nobody publicly voices any objection to the behavior, except her husband (my buddy).  My wife is pretty level-headed and says, 'that's just her and what she does.'  Doesn't seem to bother my wife too much, I guess.  Maybe it's just me who has the idea that the behavior is way obnoxious.

I have a 74 year old Father, a recovering stroke victim, that spends a little too much time doing the same facebook/inet thing at the expense of normal daily activities. It turns out I control the internet, and I just shut it down until the evening.

I've been dealing with a herniated disc in my back for the last 5 years or so. Sometimes it doesn't cause much discomfort at all, other times it's very painful. Not sure what happened, but now it must be pushing on my sciatic. Holy balls this is awful! Think I'm going break down and go to the chiropractor tomorrow.

I've been dealing with a herniated disc in my back for the last 5 years or so. Sometimes it doesn't cause much discomfort at all, other times it's very painful. Not sure what happened, but now it must be pushing on my sciatic. Holy balls this is awful! Think I'm going break down and go to the chiropractor tomorrow.

Rather than go to a chiropractor, which I've done many, many times. I would suggest you seek out a good back specialist, get some x rays or mri's which ever he/she suggests, then she or he can suggest a program to help you, i.e. a PT or medication or both. you may or may not know, I have been dealing with Major back problems for almost 50 yrs, back in the day, there wasn't much they could do, nowadays you have options. Maybe a chiropractor could help, but I would see a MD back specialist first. Good luck, hope you can get some relief.

I've already gone that route, that's how I know about the herniated disc. Wasn't impressed at all, and unfortunately he's the only back specialist here. I've always been very anti-chiropractor, but I'm desperate at this point.

Had to go out and help a sub-contractor lay out pavement markings at an intersection this morning. It's a funky intersection, had to make sure everything was right. Usually intersections are pretty typical and standard drawings work fine. This one not so much.

Lets just say being an hour and a half outside this morning was about and hour and 20 minutes too long. Fricken cold out!!

Had to go out and help a sub-contractor lay out pavement markings at an intersection this morning. It's a funky intersection, had to make sure everything was right. Usually intersections are pretty typical and standard drawings work fine. This one not so much.

Lets just say being an hour and a half outside this morning was about and hour and 20 minutes too long. Fricken cold out!!

Watervliet Avenue and Smithville Rd

Typically you have intersections that are 90 degrees. Usually you can just layout crosswalks perpendicular to the curb. Then the stop lines are all parallel to the crosswalk, just offset 4 feet. This intersection has concrete medians, and is an obtuse angle.

You just can't lay out crosswalks haphazardly. Federal Regulations have ADA Compliance. The ADA curb ramp has a mat that is used for the blind to know they are with in the crosswalk. Those are the 2'x3' embedded mats that have raised bumps on them. You can see them in the image above, they are the maroonish color mats at the curb ramps. Also, ADA ramps have slope restrictions because if the slope is too large then people in wheel chairs would find it hard to stop, they might slide into the intersection. This can restrict where a ramp is placed. So sometimes the ramp can't be put where it would optimally be placed for pedestrians. In the end, handicapped pedestrians take priority over non-handicapped pedestrians.

So the main issue was the north east corner (north is up), with the very tight turn radius. The new curb ramp is close to the existing one shown in the image. Typically most sub contractors will just go center of curb ramp and offset 5 feet on each side to get the 10 foot wide crosswalk. Well if we did that, then part of the crosswalk would be way too close to a lane of traffic. Still the curb ramp needed to be inside the crosswalk.

So I was out there making sure the crosswalks were where we wanted them to be placed to maintain compliance and safety.

A lot of times sub contractors will just glance at the plan sheet. Like this morning they assumed the stop lines were perpendicular to the curb, which is typical for state jobs. Unless it is a very sharp angle and would encroach on a left turn we keep stop lines parallel to the crosswalks. Like in the image, the side street has the stop lines parallel to the crosswalks. The main street (north and south) has the stop lines more towards the concrete medians.

Below is a more typical intersection layout. What makes it take so long is you have to measure offsets, mark a few points then draw a string a distances and spray paint a temp line by hand. Pavement Markings are put down by trucks with special attachments. So really you are marking the road twice.
