I am trying to find out if any golf course around has an Over 50 league.  I am 46 (the youngest in the league) and have been a member of a league for 3 years, at an executive board meeting the "older ladies" decided to exclude me they would propose to make their league an over 50 league.  I am trying to find out first if any other course has such leagues and if so did they originally start that way or one day was there a vote to exclude people.  Secondly I am trying to find out if this is legal or a discrimination issue I can follow up on.  I have support from the golf course but they say since the league is independently ran they can't change if the vote is done to exclude under 50.  I have not found a course where I live that would even support such a decision most pros say they would not allow it at their course.  The executive members state they want to run things like the PGA Seniors and be over 50 so the older ladies do not have to compete with the younger ladies. The problem with this theory is that the Senior PGA Tour does not utilize a handicap system like we do.  The only tournament I actually win is the club championship, the monthly tournaments and weekly games that are played I do not win due to the fact that for 9 holes we have some ladies who have a 36 handicap.  I am just curious as to any thoughts on this.  April 2, 2014 is the vote.

Suggest to them "divisions" within the league. They can offer an "overall" division and a "seniors" division and if players want they can play in both or only one.

A lot of courses will have different types of leagues (i.e. men's leagues, women's leagues, senior's leagues, couple's leagues, etc...). I would imagine most were created that way, and didn't switch from one all-inclusive league to a specific one. I

I don't know the legal side of issues like this, but I'd love to be kept informed to see the outcome.

Seems if there's a vote and enough people vote for it to pass, there won't be much you can do about it.  I think it's pretty lame of them given you're only 4 years younger.

Would anyone else in the league be affected or are you the only one under 50?  If not, this could be personal and a way for them to kick you out of the league without prejudice.

Was the league always an over 50 league and they had been basically bending the rules by letting you play?  Or is the over 50 thing a new concept?   If it has always been an over 50 league, maybe you have some angle with them, since they had been bending the rules for the past 3 years but if it the idea is to change the rules to require league players to be over 50, then they are basically abolishing the old league and creating a new one, in which case I think you are SOL.

it has been an "everyone welcome" league. As quoted by the treasurer "they don't want you to win". They want me to continue to play as a guest - but not be able to win any events/prize money.

Honestly, if they are changing the rules to keep you from winning, then I wonder why you want to continue to play with these people but I guess that is a personal decision for you.   However, it seems to me they are effectively dissolving the old "everyone welcome" league and forming an "over 50" league.   Probably not much you can do about that..

In the Phoenix area there are many "senior" leagues on various golf courses, mostly Municipal courses but some other daily fee also.  The definition of senior varies but in general 50 years of age is the lowest limit I know of.  But these same courses also have no age limit men's and women's leagues available.

For whatever it is worth, if it was me, I just find a group that welcomes me as a member and move on.

I joined this league to play with my mother who is a snow bird and it was a way for me to spend extra time with her when she was in town, which is another awkward piece to my dilemma.

It seems pretty clear to me that the gals in that league are trying to exclude you. So, why don' t you and your Mother just play together then and forego the league altogether? That seems the simplest solution for everyone and I see nothing awkward about it at all. Your Mother isn't there part of the time anyway, so it shouldn't really be an issue. But I sense there is something else to this since in your first post you also asked about legal action.......

      And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.

      He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.

      At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.

      That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
