I'm pretty sure I would be able to break 90 from the back tees, tournament set-up.

When my Dad played there he shot 83 from the member's tees, not tournament conditions. He was a 3 handicap at the time.

I would be on pace for a 95, then I would get tunnel vision on 18 and play pinball with a golf ball.  100.

Playing from the pro's tees, I doubt I'd be able to break 100...maybe not even 110. I think people underestimate the difficulty of a course like this, setup for tournament conditions

What's in my sunmountain.gif C-130 Bag:

I tend to agree.  I don't think anyone over mid-single digits breaks 100.  It goes up exponentially from there.  The average 15+ hcp needs to read @Monte the Bear 's post!

In David's bag....

Probably somewhere in the 115 range. Just a guess, as I've never putted on Major greens before...I may have 115 putts lol.

Wow, a lot of guys here would seem to score well at Augusta, off the masters tees, in tournament conditions, with thousands of people watching, and paired with professionals, broadcasted on live TV.

Sunday at the masters....

Did everyone forget those details?

Anyone over a 7 handicap would struggle to break 100.

So I pretty much pegged it when I said 82.

Cool. :)

If you can handle the crowds etc

I couldn't handle that many people watching me

Heck, I get nervous on first tees when random players are watching me.

Well, the OP didn't state that we'd be playing in The Masters. He said " Just Sunday course conditions, not pressure, tournament etc.... ". So, I take that to mean... you're playing on Augusta National set up for The Masters, but not in it. With that in mind, I was pretty close according to the posted chart. I still think I'd have a tough time with putting though and probably hover around 95.

Looks like I'd do better than I thought.

Nerves, cameras, and people don't bother me. I'll golf just as poorly with or without. Some of my best shots have come under the most pressure. The fans lining the tee boxes for the first 50 yards probably wouldn't be safe though...;)

I said in my original question that we weren't talking about competition, pressure, tournament...   That almost makes it impossible to estimate.  I was looking for what you thought you would shoot with just the Sunday setup.

I don't know that I believe it.  137 slope with the tournament setup strikes me as awfully low......  The speed and contour of the greens, the elevation changes......I think it's harder than that for the mid-higher hcp player.  Is green speed factored into slope computation?  I really don't even think that I'd break 90 on average.  Then again, for most of us schlubs, the back tees are going to take a lot of the trouble off the tee out of play.....

The slope rating came from the guy who invented the Slope rating ( Dean Knuth ) - so I don't know what to tell you

This is what he took into account:

RATING AUGUSTA NATIONAL
Following the USGA formula for rating courses, I graded each hole at Augusta National for 10 obstacle factors on a scale of 0 to 10. The rating criteria:
1. Topography. Difficulty of stance in the landing area and the vertical angle of shots to the green from the landing area. The par-4 11th, with a downhill stance and long downhill second shot, gets the highest rating, a 7.
2. Fairway. The effective target size of the landing area with the hole length factored. The 465-yard 18th, with a full dogleg right that squeezes the landing area between large fairway bunkers to the left and trees to the right, also gets a 7 rating.
3. Recoverability and rough. The par-3 12th rates highest with a 6. No U.S. Open rough at Augusta National keeps this rating category from being in the Open range of 7s to 9s.
4. Out-of-bounds. Out-of-bounds or extreme rough near the landing area and green. Nothing higher than a 2.
5. Water hazards. Difficulty of this hazard as it comes into play. The par-5 13th is an 8 with water running along the left, forcing drives toward the right trees. For those going for the green in two, there is a very difficult crossing stream that catches shots coming up short, and the green slopes toward the water and is squeezed by bunkers in the back.
6. Trees. Strategic location of trees, size and height, and their effect on drives and approach shots. The 18th leads with a 7.
7. Bunkers. Location, size, depth of bunkers relative to landing area and green target difficulty. The 18th again rates highest with a 7. The fairway bunkers on the left are forced into play by the dogleg and right-side trees. The approach from the deep fairway bunkers is a very difficult uphill shot, and the greenside bunkers are deep and strategically placed.
8. Green target. Getting onto greens in regulation, affected by the size, firmness and shape of a green in relation to the length of the approach shot. A tie with 8s for the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 18th holes. The greens have multiple small target areas depending on the hole placement, with difficult approach shots.
9. Green surface. The slope, contour and speed of the green. This is one of the most notable features of the course during the Masters. Holes 1, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 all qualify as 9s with difficult hole placements, high contours and swift Stimpmeter speeds.
10. Psychological. The mental effect on score created by very difficult obstacles near the target areas. Holes 1 and 18 are both 8s. The starting hole and the finishing hole always qualify for some values, but both of these par 4s have a collection of highly rated obstacles, giving an overall mental impact.

138 (favorite number)

I'd probably hit 3 or 5 wood off all the tees just to try and keep everything in play.

Well that's boring!!!

Of course they would NEVER do it, but I think it would be hilarious television to have a foursome of 20 HCP golfers and let them play Augusta in tournament conditions, including a decent crowd.  Imagine how hysterical it would be to see a slow-mo Peter Kostas analysis, pro-tracer, shot link, with a bunch of hacks out there.  I would absolutely watch.

And I sold myself short!  Apparently, Dean thinks I'd be good for a 90!!

That's how I took it as well.  If I have to factor in the crowd and pro playing partners in a tournament setup, there would be a snowball effect after I got to a certain point, so I'd probably end up with a WD.

I said in my original question that we weren't talking about competition, pressure, tournament...   That almost makes it impossible to estimate.  I was looking for what you thought you would shoot with just the Sunday setup.

Oh, good ... then I'll stick with my original guess of 94. ;)

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
