Looking for a neat spot to check out for 4 or 5 days during the first week of June.  Leaving the kids home this time with Grandma and Grandpa. Just the wife and me.

Never been anywhere in Florida. Was thinking about Clearwater or Key West, but would love any suggestions.  Don't know much about it.  Thanks!

P.S.-  Golf is not part of the itinerary. My wife has made that clear. :-P

Depends on what you like and want to do.  I have been to Key West, and it is fun.  Can be relaxing and a party town at the same time.  Great for couples.  Lots of neat restaurants and sunset cruises and snorkeling.  Beach is just average.

I just was in Cocoa Beach.  It is a bit more built up, but fun too and near Cape Canaveral.  Touring NASA is fun too.

I would probably go to both. Since I go to Gulf Shores all the time Key West is more of a different world tropically than the rest of Florida.

Plus I haven't had any Spanish limes (not actually limes for those that don't know) or soursop ice cream in years.

I'm afraid I would also have to overrule my wife and the golf clubs would go with me. I don't even go to the gas station without my clubs just in case I run into somebody that wants to play.

My first recommendation would be Sarasota and Siesta Key, over on the gulf coast.  Great beaches, nightlife, and dining.  The beach there is world renown for some of the softest, whitest sand you'll ever find.  It's so white that the sand doesn't even get very hot in the summer.  June is after most of the snowbirds have departed so much less crowded.  Clearwater and St Petersburg are both a short drive north and would make for a fun day trip.

Key West is ok, but a little goes a long ways for me.  Kind of like New Orleans or Vegas if you know what I mean, and there really isn't much in the way of beaches.  Ft Lauderdale and Miami are just too damn crowded.

Good info so far. Keep it coming please.  My wife is definitely interested in nice beaches and the most "tropical" feel.

The other BIG advantage (in my opinion) to Siesta Key is that it's on the gulf coast.  The west side of the state, which means you get sunsets......

.....my very favorite time of day. Especially when Grandma and Grandpa have the kids! ;-)

Seconded. I was there a few years ago and the beaches were amazing. (Speaking as someone who had never been to Florida, of course.)

If your looking the most "tropical" feel then the Keys are definitely the place. The Keys almost feel like a different country IMO (in a good way). Beaches are less than impressive. If you go to the Keys (especially Key West) your going to drink, fish (great fishing), snorkel, and eat at little mom n pop restaurants. I'm from the Gulf coast so I'm biassed but IMO the east coast beaches are for surfing. St Augustine is pretty cool for a one day trip. Cocoa is great for surfing and drinking. But my favorite is a smaller beach community called Indian Rocks beach (and surrounding areas). If your looking for "laid back" this is the area to go, its quite the beaches are not crowded and there are tons of mom n pop restaurants. This area also has plenty of places to put in a boat and plenty of interrcoastal water to fish as well. I would recommend this area 100% as it is also close to (everything is just off of Gulf Boulevard) St Pete and Clearwater. I'm not a real estate agent in Indian Rocks, honest, I just love the area and we vacation there every year.

Not sure I'll be much help there. We have family in the Sarasota area so usually stay with them. If it's a kid free special occasion we splurge and stay at the Ritz in Sarasota. Spectacular, but pretty pricey. As I said, special occasions only for us. If you do end up in Key West, there's a great little boutique resort called The Eden House that we really like. Just a couple blocks off Duval St, but far enough away from the crazies that you can relax if you want to. If you really want to impress the Mrs and have deeper pockets than I do, Check out Little Palm Island. We've only been for dinner once, but would love to spend a long weekend there some day. Some day....

I like the Key West idea because it seems like you can land right there and don't even need a car to get to the action.  That seems to be the draw back for me of some of the other places listed.  1.5 car ride after you land.  Any other spots in Florida or anywhere else on east coast you would recommend that you fly right there, and don't even really need a car?  All the reviews I've read for Key West say that a car isn't really necessary.  Just curious about any other vacation spots people have hit down there.  Thanks for all suggestions so far.  I've been checking them all out.

You can certainly get away without having a car in Key West. Public transportation is pretty good but I recommed renting a bike to get around to all the sites. If it's in your budget, I would recommend flying into Miami or Ft. Laurderdale then doing a one-way car rental to get to Key West. Generally flights are cheaper into FLL vs Key West (EYW) plus the experience of driving the Overseas Highway the entire length of the Keys is pretty awesome. The drive alone is really cool plus there are a ton of cool places to stop along the way.

Very cool suggestion. I will look into that.  Thanks!

Be careful.  Key West is known for having a lot of drunk bicycle riding accidents.

Definitely been convinced to fly into Miami and make the drive to KW.  Sounds like an amazing ride.  Those of you that know the area, would you spend all 5 nights in KW or break it up a little and stay in different places in the keys?  Just trying to figure out what might make the most sense.  I even like the idea of kind of "winging" it and just heading down from Miami the first day and see where we end up every night. Probably not a good idea from a lodging cost perspective, and my wife probably won't go for that plan, or lack of plan. Sounds fun to me though. ;-)

Other suggestions?

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
