Oh goodie ... "traveling hornets" can now be added to my list of irrational fears.  WTF??  He's just minding his own business and not disturbing a nest and they decide to go eat him?!?!?!

Not cool, hornets, not cool.

On a more serious note, it seems really fortunate that he had that lake close by.  I don't want to know what would have happened if he just had to stand there and keep waving his towel at them.

I can't believe he was able/willing to play on! 20 hornet stings is some serious business!!!

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Hornets in Asia - some of them are really big. People have died from hornet attacks. It's not uncommon.

Anyone know if a golf cart can outrun hornets?

In all honesty, the press does play up the attacks and it's only in certain areas. If you're in the big cities, populated areas, you're fine.

Hornets are attracted to cologne. Maybe the guy was wearing a bit too much?

I don't think a golf cart is outrunning a hornet.  From personal experience, riding lawn mowers do not.

I've played on courses where hornets were burrowed into the ground on the green.  One of our approach shots must have been close to a direct hit and we saw a swarm come out of the ground.  Fortunately we were pretty far away and didn't get stung but there things were big, nasty and angry.

I got stung by a white faced hornet and it felt like I got kicked in the arm.   I can't imagine getting stung 20 times.

Hit a ball where I shouldn't have last year and stepped into a ground hornets nest trying to get at it.  I was stung 5 times in the head before I could blink.

20 stings is brutal.  He's lucky he wasn't affected more than he was.  Tough guy.

I wonder if those hornets are the same ones that are in Japan..?  Those little suckers are an inch long and must pack a wallop..

The last few years there are more and more of the "Japanese hornets" (or at least that's what everybody calls them) around here. I don't know how they got here.

The ones here are more like 1 1/2 to 2 inches long but don't seem to be nearly as aggressive as the local hornets we have always had. They do like to get in the hole under the cup on the greens so it's probably only a matter of time before somebody pays a price for reaching in the cup to get their ball out of the hole after making a putt.

They seem to be attracted to porch lights and the only person I know that's been stung by one got stung on his porch at night. Regular hornets don't come out at night.

Regular yellow jackets are the biggest stinging threats around here. My oldest son got stung about 100 times on his back one day when we were hiking down in the canyon to go fishing. Luckily it didn't bother him but some people have died from that many stings.

Weird thing was that my brother and I were pulling them off of him with our hands and we never got stung a single time.

Poor Pablo! The guy follows this up with a birdie also!

Thread already running here. Agree, great recovery! [CONTENTEMBED=/t/73966/euro-player-stung-20x-by-hornets-jumps-into-lake-recovers-makes-birdie layout=block][/CONTENTEMBED]

That's something.  Guy must be tough.  Around here you worry about bees (the African kind) and the rattlers are coming out of hibernation early this year.

Tough as nails Pablo, tough as nails.

I would have been so rattled. Not only from the hornets but also because...who knows what the hell is in Malaysian water?

(there's an airplane joke in there somewhere)

The first day of golf tryouts this year, three wasps flew down my collar as I was shaking hands with the new head coach. I ended up getting stung around seven times before I could shake them out, and I probably looked just as crazy as Pablo there. On the eighth hole that same day I put my arm behind a bench where a wasp nest had started up and got stung another two times.

It hurt a bit, and both my shots after getting stung were pretty poor. The fact that he was able to make birdie and go on to shoot a 68 after that is pretty remarkable. It's made even more impressive when you realize that those were hornets, rather than just some paper wasps.
