Fundamental question, I know, but I have never ask this and it may be part of my problem.....How do you measure the correct distance between yourself and the ball??

I keep changing the distance based on how crappy my swing may be on any given day.   Thanks all.

Short answer: you should have space for your fist between the butt of the grip and your nuts. This may vary a bit from player to player, but that is a good starting position.

And if @Always an 80 is a woman she can put some cashews in her pockets.

Good answer though!!!

If she's married she probably already has her husband's nuts in her pocket!

I am married and my wife is at work with my nuts in her purse!  I hope she never has it stolen!!

Well then, use your zipper as a reference point instead.

Thread title made me think of this

@Always an 80 , yes I agree with what @Ernest Jones said, butt of the club is about a fist and a thumb away from your zipper.

Is she going to let you hang on to the cashews, or are those going in the new purse?

Oops, I left out the thumb...I also didn't go into detail about how your fist would be oriented. Some things are better answered with a picture.

Edit* FWIW I make a very "short" (retracted) thumb when doing this.

She will probably keep the cashews as well just to make a point.

I can understand the fist plus thumb distance.  I will just remember the last time I did not make it past the ladies tee!

Depends what club you use, if it's a driver, you want the ball 200yrds away minimum 9 iron 115yrds minimum, I have a measuring function on my gps watch to monitor the distances! ☺️

Good question.  I don't know.  I just set up to the ball with what feels natural, but I think that it varies enough swing to swing that some of my bad shots are likely attributable to standing too close or too far away from the ball.

I do not have a "system" or anything to make myself know that I am addressing the ball correctly.  Will be keeping an eye on this thread.

I read somewhere that if you are in a good setup position you should be able to let your hands hang down and just touch the top of your knee cap. This helped me with distance from the ball as well as little more knee bend and bending at the hips. You will find a lot of answers but the key is to find one that keeps you from drifting closer or farther away and being able to cheat the system you are using. So far that system is working for me but who knows in a week or two.

I actually address the ball based on balance, I sit the club head square behind the ball, then I take my stance and sort of shuffle back until my weight is just about on the balls of my feet, not totally on my balls but almost, and I feel that I am almost reaching out to the ball with my club head, not actually reaching out, but just to the point where I'm comfortable before I find myself reaching, it's a feel/weight/balance thing, I've been concentrating on it a lot with my irons recently as obviously each iron is just slightly further away, so I don't really look for a distance, just the the amount of weight/balance towards the balls of my feet and the feeling reaching the ball with the head but without stretching! I'm finding this comfortable balanced address is allowing me to shift my weight forward through the swing and making a huge difference to my approach shots!

Seems so easy but I really fidget with this one. Unfortunately when my shanks virus is set in....I stand silly far away with my arms quite stretched out. I look like moe Norman as I take a big wide backswing with a very stable spine angle. I keep good balance and being so far back it's almost impossible to drift forward and hit the hosel....thus....no shanks. I do this for awhile until the virus seems cured and then I go back to a reasonable stance. Why don't I keep the far stance? Well....I know it's wrong, it strains my upper back and most important ....I look like an assclown over the ball. I dunno. Shanks are so devastating.

Hold the club in your normal grip horizontal to the ground and with your lead arm fully extended, then bend from the hips (not the waist) by pushing you arse back until the club head is resting in a natural fashion on the ground in your address position.

Voila.

    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
