What tees do y'all play? I am worried about having to hit driver twice on each par 4. Just kidding, I hit my 7i about 230 + roll - suck back.

You play whatever tee is appropriate for you. There's no set of tees required to be played, at least there wasn't last year.

Blue tees probably. Otherwise I can't create course handicaps (etc.).

Mike and I might not even play. If we get 18, we're just driving around visiting groups.

Who do you think we are? @tristanhilton85???

Why not? 3 foursomes and 2 threesomes not so bad eh? I would be surprised if the course would mind.

Because:

a) Mike and I aren't eligible anyway.

b) It's more "fair" if we travel around and visit different groups throughout the day.

c) A threesome is at a disadvantage in a "best 3 of 4 Stableford" and trying to balance it by giving them a higher percentage of their handicap strokes is more effort than it's worth.

Well in that case maybe you and Mike can do one of the threesomes each, so c) would cancel a). Just sayin'. You can do the fair stuff on Saturday.

Anyway, would be cool if you played IMO. No biggie either way.

Did we all play the blue tees last year, i thought we played the white.... Sorry I miss-spoke about the tee situation, but I don't remember playing the blues last year.

I'm going to have to look at what the course plays from the blues, it'll probably be the longest course I've played ever rofl.

If we get 18 people, just go with 6 threesomes. Unless Erik has two locals who are playing, so making it 20.

Blue tees are 6475 yards, not too bad. This course it tough because it's kinda tight off the tee, and there are some hazard areas. Its also up and down, bit hilly. so some approach shots play further.

Its a great course though, lots of character.

Ah, I didn't remember it being too long from the whites but I figured it would play around 7k from the blues. Should be fine for me then.

Can you hit driver on most the par 4s (except the one that is 288)?

Depends on the hole. A few of them have hazards that bisect the fairway, so you either take a chance to clear it, or you lay back. I remember hitting a good amount of drivers the last time I was there.

At Fox Meadow? We played the golds there I think. They have black, blue, and gold at reasonable lengths.

Well in that case maybe you and Mike can do one of the threesomes each, so c) would cancel a). Just sayin'. You can do the fair stuff on Saturday.

Saturday is a two-person or perhaps four-person scramble where everyone uses the same club (i.e. everyone uses their 5-iron or whatever the group decides to use as their one club). It's just to see the course.

Again, we have reasons for doing what we've decided to do. Odds are Mike and I aren't going to be playing.

See above. Three is inefficient and rude to the golf course, who cut us a deal and who will have to send two carts out with each slot. Plus 18 = six tee times; we have five. It's also antithetical to have a bunch of threesomes. You meet and play with fewer 33% fewer people. :D

One of the longest 6500 yard courses you'll find.

Look at #4 for example. Measures 300 or so, but… I don't think the play is to hit your driver.

Par fours where I hit driver from the blue tees:

1 yes

4 no

5 no

8 no

9 maybe

10 yes

13 no

16 usually

17 maybe

18 maybe

Anyway, that's the point of the Saturday round - so y'all can see the golf course.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
