Lol, we can go to Denino's in Staten Island. Have been hankering for the Clam Pie.

According to the article, the white clam pie is at Lee's. I'm actually in that area quite frequently, but we can always play at La Tourette and then go for lunch.

I'd try them, too, I just wouldn't pay for a whole package until I was sure it was good. I love Swedish Fish, but with chocolate cookies?

I had my first falafel yesterday. Not sure how I never had one. Verdict = meh. I like Middle-eastern food. The falafel seems more like a vehicle to carry other stuff than the star of the show.

Were they dry and crumbly and bitter tasting? There can be a big difference between bad falafel and good falafel. For example the frozen ready to eat falafel from Trader Joe's is terrible.

Also, possibly, if you don't like hummus, you won't like falafel.

No. I could taste the chick peas and it was moist. I was just hoping for more flavor.

Oh well. Maybe they didn't put in enough mint or spices/seasonings. If you're ever in NYC and willing to reassess, try Taïm's falafel, store or truck.

Don't give up - falafel varies widely - both by regional style and also, of course, by execution.  The best falafel is definitely the star of it's own show.  The worst is a bland substitute for gyro meat, lol.

My favorite falafel has been from Persian or Lebanese places - my least favorite from Greek places (ie - vegetarian gyro) . .but the taste and texture varies quite a bit from place to place.  I had a chance, recently, to try "Isreali" style falafel . .was a bit underwhelmed but I don't know if it's the style of falafel or the place I had it.

Thanks. I will try again! This was a Greek place. The rest of their food was excellent. I have some Lebanese friends that I'll ask for recommendations.

Speaking of falafel, I had just come home a few years ago so my wife could give birth, anyway.  We are in the hospital and my brother tells me that there is a great falafel place down the street (we were at tufts med down town Boston) so I say great.

We go and get some and then come back to the hospital room with all my family there.  We start eating them and my brother is mentioning how great they taste and my father just blurts out that they aren't that great and they argue for a while and I just keep quiet.

Anyway, after my wife and I are alone I mention to her that my dad is right, they weren't that good.  It's probably because I'm comparing them to the falafel I probably had a week before in KSA at a Lebanese place and we just laugh.

It absolutely matters where you get them from and how they are made.. Big, small, stuffed ect.  I rarely have falafel sandwiches anymore, mostly on the side as an item part of a large group of other foods like eggs, hummus, tabuli, zhatar and other things that we eat with Syrian bread.

Anyway, don't give up :) LOL but don't try that place in Boston next to tufts medical for falafel, but they do have awesome steak and cheese and pizza.

Well duh, why in the world would you get falafel from a place that sells pizza? It's like getting Chinese food from a place that also serves fried chicken wings and Crab Rangoon. :-P

Most of the cheap fried stuff is pre-processed and bought frozen from a distributor anyway.

I'm starting to see that a lot, pizza on menus for non-Italian places. I think it has become a back up meal for picky eaters.

Yeah, it's mainly a Lebanese store and according to my brother famous for their falafel :)

Pizza is such good default choice I can't blame them!
